Today, the only thing everyone is counting on is change. Big West adding Hawaii and maybe BSU makes it a regional non football conference.

Same goes with a WCC that sees growth all around it and has to be concerned with its own growth plans, and watching a mega-merger out east makes them seem less relevant.

Yeah, those are places that didn't want anything to do with us several years ago - but everyone is out there making contingency plans for their contingency plans right now...

Things being summarily ruled out just don't mesh with the environment right now, and I find it tremendously hard to believe that (a) the WAC will survive, (b) that doesn't lead to something more like a merger than a dispersal draft, and (c) that doesn't cause other groups to consider their own next steps.UDenver20noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17196208.post-81182963252413448232012-07-10T15:09:26.814-06:002012-07-10T15:09:26.814-06:00One thing for sure............DU is F##ked! One thing for sure............DU is F##ked!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17196208.post-790545824004531972012-07-10T15:05:58.123-06:002012-07-10T15:05:58.123-06:00The WCC & the Big West want nothing to do with...The WCC & the Big West want nothing to do with DU or Seattle.

Boise State will receive financial help from the Big East to pay the Big West schools for travel costs.

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/8118915/boise-state-broncos-beat-deadline-bolt-mountain-westdggoddardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00745826019598020062noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17196208.post-79618748695074018992012-07-10T14:54:01.349-06:002012-07-10T14:54:01.349-06:00If the WAC falls apart, the only option is not add...If the WAC falls apart, the only option is not adding a tremendously expensive football program that would play in 1/4 full Mile High Stadium.

A non-football survival is definitely realistic - as two other non football conferences already exist on the west coast.

Not entirely sure why everyone is assuming that Denver and Seattle are going to have trouble following BSU unless the Broncos go Mountain West (and even then, MWC has an odd number of olympic sports as is... so I'm not sure why it isn't being thrown out there more).

Geographically speaking, the Big West + WAC Non-Football Remnants (Denver, Seattle, BSU) makes a lot of sense - and would give Denver a BETTER option than the WCC, which has clearly snubbed their noses at us (and probably Seattle) numerous times.

That is definitely a viable Division I non-football conference with a regional footprint vs a (primarily) single state footprint... With multiple MSAs(think broadcasting).

Or, thinking strategically (should CUSA and/or SBC and/or MWC merge), a WCC+BW+WAC remnants merger would make a trememdous amount of senes if you buy into the strength in numbers argument that Karl Benson made when he advocated that merger some time ago...

Or, it would give the MWC groups a reason to consider a more regional mega conference for travel reasons (among others).

There are options out there and the world will continue to turn even after the WAC's next steps (or demise).UDenver20noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17196208.post-69977290853339689312012-07-10T14:49:26.467-06:002012-07-10T14:49:26.467-06:00Q: Can DU get into a "crappy" conference...Q: Can DU get into a "crappy" conference without a football program?

A: It remains to be seen.dggoddardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00745826019598020062noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17196208.post-46792175753772637102012-07-10T14:30:56.019-06:002012-07-10T14:30:56.019-06:00@10:40

Having to keep a few sports in a crappy conference for a few years until a better option opens up is chump change, compared to the waste of money and energy that would happen if DU tried to add football. The idea is laughable. Football is a comparative failure at CU and CSU. DU is a much smaller school--we should stick to what we're good at. Just because you yell that something is a fact! doesn't make it so. Support your statements with balanced evidence or they are merely opinions. Opinions that most reasonable people would disagree with.

I believe football would be a terrible idea. DU can barely get 6,000 out for a hockey game. A hockey program with over 60 years of history in our community with amazing success. Broncos rule in Denver. CU and CSU have long histories with some high levels of success and don't draw well at the gate. I'd be surprised if DU could draw 20k to a game. The successful football programs in the country draw 75k+ and have huge TV contracts.
