Puck Daddy has an article about University of North Dakota hockey player Rocco Grimaldi. Apparently the Freshman wants less sexy outfits on the fairer sex. Should be pretty interesting in the DU student section on Feb. 24-25 when North Dakota comes to town.
Wow. This is disturbing on number of levels.
ReplyDeleteI have no issues with players following a strict lifestyle to fit their religious beliefs. Tyler Ruegsegger was a great example of this kind of athlete. More power to 'em.
But athletes who use their exhalted status to try to force their beliefs on others are treading on much more flimsy ground.
And we like boobs, too.
Wonder how this will play in the room in Grand Forks?

ReplyDeleteWhy is it "disturbing" that a kid has some strongly held beliefs and is willing to share them? Seems like we tolerate almost anything these days, except being a person of faith. I'm not partiuclarly religious, but I think I like this kid. The bigger question is: why did the Sioux recruit him, since he'll obviously be shunned by his teammates? Rocco doesn't exactly fit in with their image.

Regarding Rocco's comments, Puck Daddy hit the nail on the head.
Hey, get your knickers in a twist over what some 18 year old thinks. It's a free country. Would you ahem, gentlemen, be ripping him if he said he was gay, fighting a drug or alcohol problem, the product of an abusive home, a bicycle seat sniffer, a mope? Nope. We'd be congratulating him on how "brave" he was. But let him share his religious inclinations and the usual mob shows up with the flaming torches and pitchforks.
ReplyDeleteNobody is ripping him for his religious inclinations. As the first poster said, Tyler Ruegsegger was very religious. Tyler was one of my favorite players of the past decade. I'm sure lots of players on the current DU team are. Hell, I am too.
ReplyDeletePeople disagree with his comment and what he said. Sorry Old Pio, but his comment is more similar to a child molester saying that children shouldn't play in a park because they tempt him...than it is similar to him saying that he is the product of an abusive home.
Sorta reminds me of the great Tyler Ruegsegger - another hero of Denver Hockey..... I think it's great to stand tall by your beliefs and faith - no matter who you are; and yes... even if you go to school in North Dakota. Man I miss Ruegs - when the refs blew a call (gee imagine that), the Coaches & players would be yelling, "that's bullsheet; what the fugg, you gotta be fuggin kidding me" .... Tyler would be just as intense and mad, if not more so.... but he'd be standing right beside them screaming, "Oh come on, that's BOGUS"!!! LOL

Off topic, but I heard that the actor who played Napolean Dynamite refused to say the cuss words in the script because of his beliefs/standards. His "Gosh" and all made the movie so much better.

ReplyDeleteThe bottom line is this: you can rationalize, justify, excuse or re-define intolerance. But it's still intolerance. Some of you don't like his religious beliefs and how he's expressed them. And you've got lots of reasons why he ought to shut up. Why not lighten up and give the kid a break? Heck, if he scores a couple of GWGs against DU this year, I'll bring my own lighted torch.
ReplyDeleteIt's a two way street Old Pio. Based on your logic, Rocco is being very intolerant of a woman's right to chose to wear whatever she wants as long as it fits within the bounds of the law.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Old Pio. Everyone take a look at the whole statement the kid made... he is telling women and men alike to take personal responsibility for their actions. Wow... what a concept. DEFINITELY doesn't fit the ND mold. Refreshing to see a young man willing to stand up for what he believes.

If I read the tweets like you did, I completely agree with your conclusion and completely support and respect Rocco for standing up in his belief that people need to take personal responsibility for their actions. That's quite a noble cause that I'm sure everyone can get behind.

It's like attending a NAMBLA meeting and walking away with the message that "Love is a good thing and something we all need more of in our lives". Do you suppport NAMBLA too? Or are you intolerant?
