University of Denver ice hockey recruit Cody DePourcq and his Penticton Vees' teammates defeated the New Brunswick's Woodstock Slammers 4-3 Sunday in Humboldt, Sask., to win the RBC Cup national Junior A championship.
Pencticton scored the game-winner with 51 seconds remaining in third period.
The Vees lost the first two games at the five-team national tournament, falling 2-1 to Ontario's Soo Thunderbirds and 3-2 to the host Humboldt Broncos, but then beat Woodstock 2-1 and Manitoba's Portage Terriers 3-1 to advance to the playoffs.
Eight players on Penticton's roster from Minnesota, including forward Mario Lucia, son of Minnesota Gophers coach Don Lucia.
Penticton went 54-4-0-2 in the regular season and had seven of the league's top nine scorers.
Cody DePourcq scored one goal and had two assists in the playoffs, but was also one of the youngest players in the league. He'll have a bigger role in the next year or two in Juniors.
