TrotterWatch™ - Gwozdecky Radio Show

Friday mornings when DU is playing at home, Coach Gwozdecky appears on the 950 AM "The Fan" in Denver. Needless to say the conversation drifted around to "you know who" and Gwozdecky was able to shed a little more light on the situation.

Note: The interview was paraphrased* and all quotes may not be in context.

  • Gwozdecky is sincerely happy for Trotter to be able to sign a pro contract.
  • Difficulties/situation go back 3 weeks.
  • Closure on issue, now DU can move on. No more dark clouds hanging over team.
  • Very distracting, very difficult for team and Brock.
  • Moving on to AHL was the best option for Brock.
  • Difficult 3 weeks for the DU hockey program. Almost everyday there were new issues to deal with.
  • Issues and dynamics between Okposo and Trotter very different. End result was the same.
  • Gwoz does not fault Montreal at all.
  • Brock's personal relationship with Gwoz and teammates has never been better.
  • Gwoz and the team were expecting/hoping Trotter would remain a Pioneer.

Here's my Gwozspeak to English translation of the radio interview:

- Gwozdecky is sincerely happy for Trotter to be able to sign a pro contract.(Gwozspeak Translation: "Happy is a relative term. I'm happy the siutation is over")

-Difficulties/situation go back 3 weeks. (Gwozpeak Translation: "That's how long it took for DU to decide to finally kick him out and for him to find an NHL/AHL deal.)

-Closure on issue, now DU can move on. No more dark clouds hanging over team. (Gwozpeak Translation: "Where are we going to get Trotter's offensive production without Trotter? There are lots of dark clouds still hanging over this team. I don't know if we can clear them or not.")

-Very distracting, very difficult for team and Brock. (Gwozspeak Translation: "Very True")

-Moving on to AHL was the best option for Brock. (Gwozspeak translation): "The other options were abject humiliation, trnsfer the juniors or the ECHL. Of course the AHL was his best option.")

- Difficult 3 weeks for the DU hockey program. Almost everyday there were new issues to deal with.
(Gwozspeak translation: "You know how universities work. Slowly and buerucratically. I'm very tired of this. It sucks to have to deal with stiuff like this")

-Issues and dynamics between Okposo and Trotter very different. End result was the same. Does not fualt Montreal.(Gwozspeak Translation: "Don't blame Montreal. They were great. They saved Trotter's butt and my butt from having to to make a public dismissal and having to humilate Trotter further."

-Brock's personal relationship with Gwoz and teammates has never been better. (Gwozspeak Translation: "With Trotter gone, his attitude problem is gone too"

- Gwoz and the team were expecting/hoping Trotter would remain a Pioneer. (Gwozspeak Translation: "The University kicked him out, not the hockey team"

Wasmania,

How much innuendo do you need? Read the blog comments over the past 8 days. There's been over 100 comments posted and something in there for everybody.

Swami,

Nice work.

It is obvious that the hockey program was trying to find a way to keep Trotter if it was at all possible (you don't get rid of your leading scorer going into a crucial series unless absolutley necessary) but it was not possible because school administrators would not allow it. The initial suspension was probably an olive branch to the admin. but when it became apparent that this was not enough (i.e "we aren't certain is he is suspended for the MN series, don't know if he is still on the team") then it became a matter of salvaging the situation. The last thing that a program as successful and and high profile as this one wants to do is scare off potential recruits which is why this had a happy ending at least for Trotter.

Is Trotter a legit pro prospect? I don't follow any of the WCHA teams so I havent seen him play. I noticed he's been Denver's top point producer the last couple years, yet he was never drafted. Seems odd, since Montreal sure seems interested, and Denver is a high profile program. Just a late bloomer?

Trotter was hurt badly in his drft year, otherwise he probably would have been a 3/4th round pick.

Trotter almost certainly would have been drafted but he suffered a season ending severed achillies tendon injury in his first year at DU (his draft year).

He is an unbelievably gifted player who has great vision and stick work. His size may limit his NHL dream, but he has a shot at becoming a solid AHL player. Perhaps he will make the NHL at some point.

He has talent, but as we all knoe the NHL is firstly about size & strength.

DG, I havent seen any speculation on what Trotter actually did to get into the spot he is in. Since you write about player issues all the time I figured you would speculate as you have on other players issues.

Gwozdecky said on TV on friday that "He hopes Trotter comes back to DU to finish his degree."

Must not be that serious.
