Reports are trickling in of an insurgency against the Denver Boone logo originally designed by the Walt Disney Company for the University of Denver. Without getting into the gory details, some of the Faculty object on the basis that the "Pioneers" wiped out the indigenous peoples that inhabited the west, oppressed people of color and who knows what else.
What this has to do with a cartoon character who wears a coonskin hat and a big smile is mystifying to say the least. You can bet the misguided crowd that harbors this logic, numbers a handful of people on campus, some of whom receive their salaries from revenue created by student tuition and alumni donations.
Keep in mind that a popular new logo will spur merchandise sales to, you guessed it, students, alumni & fans of the University of Denver. Increased merchandise sales from a Boone logo will undoubtedly enable our Athletic Department to fund scholarships to DU's student athletes. Most athletes at DU only receive partial scholarships, and have to cover the rest of their educational expenses out of their own pocket.
Increased revenue for the Athletic Department will also help defray budget deficits that require higher tuition & student activity fees making it tougher for DU to attract the most qualified students. Students that will enhance our university in the short term as undergraduates and in long run as enthusiastic alumni.
DU held a referendum on Boone this past Spring and thousands voted to bring it back. A few hundred objected, some of whom obviously are offended by the Boone caricature. The thousands who voted "Yes" are potential Boone merchandise customers. The hundreds who voted "No" should be politely told to get on board or take a hike.
Who knows how this will end up, but DU will need strong leadership to overcome the "Forces of Evil" that place their agenda above the best interests of the University, the Athletic Department, the students, our athletes and a vast majority of people who support our great university.
Go DU & Go Boone
