Boone no more represents a sodbusting Pioneer than does the jelly donut.
Daniel "Boone" was not a Pioneer; he was an early American explorer who NEVER got any farther west than Missouri. Denver itself was founded some 38 years after Boone's death.
Want a better logo than the silly jelly donut? Don't go back to the even more irrelevant Boone. A covered wagon might be appropriate. Or perhaps a sod roofed cabin.
The best solution would be to drop the stupid Pioneer nickname.
Dunlop......get the moose excrement out from between your ears. Pioneer refers to any settler who migrated west. Doesn't matter where they settled, whether KY, PA, CO, or MT. Any explorer who migrated and settled the American frontier = Pioneer. What are you confused about??
Donald maybe be sometimes a little bombastic and insulting in his tone (which is a big part of his appeal and charm if you ask me), but he also usually has a good kernel of truth in what he writes, if you look beneath the tone.
I don't think anyone around DU was really thinking about Daniel Boone the man or his connections (or lack of) to Denver when the Denver Boone character was created in the 1960s. My guess is the Denver Boone name came about as an afterthought when the smiling character was introduced with a coonskin cap (something Danieal Boone the man actually never wore). More info on that here: http://www.boonesociety.com/articles/Daniel%20Boone%20Was%20A%20Man.htm
The Pioneer nickname dates back 80 years or so and nearly all living alumni identify themselves with the name, so throwing that away is problematic, too. The saving grace for Pioneer is that it can mean more than a western settler - it can also mean an innovator, etc, but showing that meaning visually is tough as a mascot.
And The Native Americans are likely going to be upset with any covered wagon imagery, too...
Donald was just having a hard time defending himself. Anchorage is clearly a better team than Denver. I mean come on, they can see the fucking Russians from their houses. With such competitive neighbors, they must be great at something. Could be hockey, could be shooting shit from helicopters...

Your school's teams are nicknamed "Pioneers".

Don't hate because UAA barely knows what a hockey puck is. Your ocean puppies are terrible.
I didn't think they had jelly donuts in Anchorage.
So dd exactly why do you care?

I enjoy Donald's postings as well. Bombastic and insulting...sure, sometimes. He's definitely passionate and colorful.
If Boone comes back, great. Otherwise, DU needs a good mean looking, rough and tumble, kick ass Pioneer mascot.
