(above) Luke "The Goal Czar" Salazar went from being a Freshman "walk on" hockey player to being mentioned on the NY Times website this morning. Not bad for your first semester in college.

Colorado and Minnesota get a lot of attention in today’s elections, but they were also the focus of W.C.H.A. fans over the weekend. In the west No. 1 Colorado College and No. 4 Denver University faced off in a pair of Battles of I-25, and in the north four schools clashed in the inaugural State of Minnesota Hockey Showcase.
In Colorado, the Tigers got the best of the showdown, skating to a 2-2 tie Friday night at Denver and picking up a 3-2 win on home ice in Colorado Springs on Sunday.
The D.U. Pioneers had the better of the offensive chances over both games, but Colorado College sophomore goalie Richard Bachman (Dallas Stars) was the star of the weekend. Bachman stopped 44 shots in Friday’s tie and 40 more for the win on Sunday — a .955 weekend save percentage — to remain unbeaten on the season.
Bachman is already building on an impressive freshman campaign when he was just the second player ever to be simultaneously named player of the year and rookie of the year in the W.C.H.A. (Wisconsin goalie and future N.H.L. star Curtis Joseph was the first, in 1988-89.) Stars fans already know the value of good college goalies. Current Dallas starter Marty Turco won two national championships during his four-year stint at the University of Michigan.
Islanders prospect Rhett Rakhshani had a goal for the Pioneers in their Friday night tie. Mike Chambers of The Denver Post offers some further thoughts on the Rocky Mountain series. [read rest of article]
