We received word today that former DU and NHL player George Morrison passed away on Wednesday afternoon. Last week we were saddened to learn of the passing of Jim White, who has been a fixture at DU hockey games since the Sixties.
Both battled lengthy illnesses and in my last conversation with Jim, we spoke about Morrison's health. Despite his own health issues, Jim was pulling for George whom he knew well. Needless to say these giants of DU hockey can't be replaced, but will forever be remembered for their role in putting DU hockey on the map.
George Morrison scored DU's second goal of the game in the 1969 National Championship contest against Cornell. The 4-3 victory is considered to be one of the greatest in DU hockey history for several reasons. It came against Cornell goaltender Ken Dryden, it was Murray Armstrong's last championship and it was Keith Magnuson's final game at DU.
Jim White was DU’s longtime head of off-ice officiating, died last Thursday night at his home. Jim, who before this season had not missed a DU hockey game since 1974, suffered from liver and kidney failure. Jim was DU’s biggest hockey fan, and a loyal supporter of the WCHA and college hockey in general.
We don't have any details on Jim's funeral yet.
George's funeral will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Memorial Chapel on the Union College campus. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Dutchwomen’s ice hockey team in his name.
Pioneer Nation is still cheering for both Jim and George we wish the best for your families in this difficult time.

Both losses leave me very sad. But at the same time honored to have been friends with both these DU Hockey legends. We will surely miss them both. God Speed.
