Denver Shuts Out Michigan Tech

“We wanted to establish some consistent play on the road tonight and a number of guys played really well for us.”
- Coach Gwozdecky
The University of Denver rolled to 6-0 victory tonight against Michigan Tech as goaltender Marc Cheverie recorded his second career shutout.

The game was close after one period as Denver clung to a narrow 1-0 lead. Michigan Tech dominated stretches of the first period and DU was fortunate to have the lead.

However, DU scored four goals in a short span late in the second period and the horn was the only thing that saved Tech from further damage.

DU's recent turnaround can be traced to Brandon Vossberg's insertion into the line up against Minnesota two weeks ago. Denver has outscored their opponents 20-2 in those four games. Vossberg's return from Casa Del Bow-Wow has coincided with DU's offensive explosion.

Vossberg's linemates, Anthony Maiani had a goal and two assists and Jesse Martin chipped in with a goal and an assist.

DU's Tyler Bozak had two assists, one shorthanded when he sprung Maiani and one on a power play.

Denver has a lot to prove this weekend. Will this team win on the road for the first time this season? Can they put together a nice winning streak? Can Chevy maintain his high level? Most importantly, can they be consistent? The last three games have been great, but before that not so much.

My prediction is if they struggle on the road the next two weekends we're looking at a middle of the pack, .500 team this year.

I think we'll learn a lot this weekend.

DU sweeps.

It's still too early to be making any judgment calls on being "a middle of the pack, .500 team". Remember '04?

Is that you Mannino Saves?

Its going to be a crazy year in the WCHA. A sweep and could you near first place. Get swept and you might fall to 8th place.

Key on the road in the WCHA is match the intensity of your opponent.

And hope that no one poaches Bozak over Xmas. :-)

We'll learn some things this weekend, but it is way too early to start predicting anything. Even if DU struggles in the next 2 series, who knows what happens the rest of the season? Trying to predict college kids is a wild goose chase.

I just hope the Pios play hard this weekend and bring the intensity. That's about all we can ask for.

The last 10 minutes of the second period demonstrated DU's offensive power. This had to be demoralizing for MTU. The rest of the game was a lot closer than the score indicated.

MTU is not at the elite level in the WCHA. The team still needs to play with focus, intensity, grit, passion, determination and toughness to ensure no let down tonight. If they do there is no reason we shouldn't sweep.
Go DU!!!
