DU Alum Will Play For NHL's Colmbus Blue Jackets

The Columbus Blue Jackets claimed DU Alum Wade Dubielewicz off waivers from the New York Islanders on Saturday and assigned goaltender Dan LaCosta to the club's American Hockey League affiliate in Syracuse.

Dubielewicz will back up rookie star Steve Mason while Pascal Leclaire's status remains uncertain. Leclaire has an ankle injury that may require season-ending surgery.

The 29-year-old Dubielewicz has a 16-13-2 record, a 2.55 goals-against average and .920 save percentage in 37 career NHL games with the Islanders. He spent the first part of this season with Kazan Ak-Bars of the Russian Kontinental Hockey League, but was signed Thursday by the Islanders after backup Joey MacDonald joined starter Rick DiPietro on the injured list.

Why did the Islanders bring him back then?

At least he'll be playing for a better ranked team. But it seems to soon for him to be leaving the Islanders. They just signed him like a week ago.

There's a rule in the Collective Bargaining Agreement that says if a team signs a player from Europe they have to clear waivers first.

The rule was designed to stop teams from unfairly signing European superstars.

Columbus is in the playoff hunt and needed a backup. However its pretty unusual for a team to claim a player in Dubbie's situation. Once again the Islanders were outfoxed.

Now the question that needs to be asked is, how did Dubbie get out of his contract in Russia? Seems like the Isles had something to do with it and they've lost Dubbie.

The Islanders are a total mess, so it isn't shocking that they got outfoxed by the Blue Jackets on this one. He is in a better situation in the short term as he will play behind a better team in Columbus. Also this is a good news for another DU alum as Peter Mannino is currently the back up with the Islanders and he might very well get a start or two in the show.

Mannino was in Binghamton, NY when Dubie got claimed and had to make his way back to Long Island. He just made it in time to dress for the game. Peter could be on the Island for a while as MacDonald is out for 2 to 4 weeks and DiPietro is likely done for the season. I am sure the Isles are probably exploring the waiver wire right now or looking to make a trade for an NHL experienced goalie.

He actually signed a 1-way deal and the Icelanders in their brilliance sent him to Bridgeport for a quick conditioning stint. When they sent him down he hit waivers and was eligible for 24 hours to be picked up by any of the other 29 teams in the league. The Blue Jackets jumped on the opportunity seeing that Steve Mason has played nearly every game since Pascal Laclaire has been out and thus screwed over the Icelanders, thank god and left them with unproven Yann Danis and Manno in net.
