If you've seen a DU Hockey Media Guide in recent seasons, you've probably read the articles about the 1958 and 1960 National Championship teams from the University of Denver. Dick Hilker was a young sportswriter for the Denver Post, covered the Pioneer hockey team from 1956-60 and wrote those articles.Later he would go on work for suburban community papers, but still writes opinion pieces for the Denver Post some 50 years later.
Tomorrow we will feature an exclusive article by Mr. Hilker on the historic match-up between the Soviet Union and the University of Denver hockey team played in Colorado Springs on Jan. 10, 1959.
Recently DU's 1958 National Championship Team was inducted into the DU Athletics Hall of Fame and many of those players competed in the historic game with the Soviets.
