RUMFORD, Maine -- Denver's overwhelming depth and quality wore down its rivals, lifting the Pioneers to the team title at the 56th NCAA Ski Championships.

Trailing Vermont by two points in the team standings entering today's final Nordic races, Denver used a 1-4 finish in the women's 15K freestyle and solid finish in the men's 20K to seize the national title.

Vermont, tenuously atop the team standings entering the final day, wound up in third place behind runner-up Colorado.

Denver, armed with a full, 12-skier roster, amassed 659 points to claim its second consecutive national title and record 20th overall.

Denver quickly erased the Catamounts' tenuous two-point advantage in this morning's women's race thanks in large part to Antje Maempel, who completed a championship sweep of the women's Nordic events. Maempel nipped Colorado's Alexa Turzian by only a half-second. Two days ago, Maempel won the 5K classical race.

Denver needed only to avoid a meltdown in the men's 20K to seal its victory, and its mens freestle cross country skiers finished sixth, 19th and 24th in the 39-man field.

Didn't win a meet all season, but peaked when it counted. Tremendous. A big boost for all DU's athletes...

Congrats to the DU ski team. We must have some smart coaches. Like Swami said--not winning a meet all year, then putting it all together with a dominant win at the end. Great accomplishment!!
