St. Cloud State shocked DU in a 2-1 overtime victory last night in front of 6,050 fans at Magness Arena.
Tyler Ruegsegger scored DU’s lone goal, while Marc Cheverie stopped 25 shots as the Pioneers’ four-game unbeaten streak came to a halt. With the loss DU has virtually no chance of winning the MacNaughton Cup despite holding a precarious one point lead over North Dakota.
DU has one game remaining and UND has three games. Denver also falls to 6th in the Pairwise Rankings.

Very lame effort by the Pios last night. I saw a team that just kind of sat back in the 3rd period giving St. Cloud everything they could of hoped for. It was almost like a 1-0 was good enough and they gave up. That over time goal once more shows DU defensive problems turning the puck over right in the back of the net easily bringing it to the front putting it past Chevy. I don't think he expected it either... I know I didn't and it happened right in front of me. This team needs to really learn how to match intensity, up the physical play and stay on par with their opponent. Up the effort DU because come playoff time no one will give an ounce of mercy to you.
Only one word for that game: brutal. A split with St. Cloud at home?? Geez.......
I agree with the previous comments on lame effort, particularly in the 3rd. Not that it should effect play, but the crowd was fairly lame all weekend also. By the way, the dropped to a tie for third in the PWR, so still in the running for a number one seed, but that will change over the next two weeks if we don't take care of business
Disappointing loss last night. I really thought DU was poised to get 4 points this weekend. Hard to believe that the Pios only beat St. Cloud once in 4 games this year. However, I give a lot of credit to the Huskies. They kept battling last night and deserved to win. DU looked sluggish and tired at the end, at least from the TV broadcast.
The MacNaughton is probably not a realistic target anywhere, unless the Sioux falter in their last 3 games. DU needs to focus on beating a CC team that has only lost once to DU in the last 11 games I believe.
I'm with Twister. This was not a lame DU effort by any means. This was a DU team that simply had run out of gas in the third from line shifting guys and too many PKs, plus playing without their two best offensive talents, against a very good opponent.
DU held the high octane SCSU offence to three goals all weekend, and that's all you can ask.
DU played well, SCSU played better. That's the WCHA.
The team will finish second in the WCHA which is terrific, given that they were a 3-4 consensus pick.
I'm with Puck Swami on this one. I think the penalties were the problem compared to Friday night (it was hard to believe it was the same referee team both nights). I liked the way the Pios played both nights, they just asked too much of the PK team on Saturday and it finally bit them. Welosky was fantastic. It could have easily been the same score as Friday if not for him and the penalties, especially Testuide's second. He's in the box way too much for a captain.
Completely agree. Last night was a bit of a setback but St. Cloud is a good team and seemed to have more energy at the end and deserved to win.
DU has had some hiccups along the way, but overall this has been a great season. Guaranteed at least a 2nd place finish in the WCHA, another 20-win season, close to the top in ranking, it's been a good ride thus far.
With Bozak ready to come back in hopefully 2 weeks and hopefully everyone else healthy, it's hard not to be excited about the team's chances. DU may not win the MacNaughton but I wouldn't be surprised to see this team competing for the Broadmoor again and poised to make a trip to Washington.
You didn't think we were going to let you control our destiny. You better bring your A game because CC is a darn good team. Of all the teams we have played against CC is the best. I don't think this is the same team the Pios beat a couple weeks ago.
Go Sioux
"blahhdablahda blah! blahhdablahda blah! blahdablahda scalp the Sioux!"
ticklemygonads....chirp, chirp, chirp. DU didn't beat CC earlier, homeslice. Anyway, two words for you and the Sioux--Go Badgers. Few things would make me happier than DU beating CC next weekend and the Badgers kicking the snot out of the Sioux.
You can certainly tell DU and CC are cut from the same cloth. I can't think of one other team besides DU and CC when it comes to whining all the way to the sin bin. The refs have to listen to these two teams after every call. Enough already.
Wasn't UND whinning all the way to the sin bin at the end of regulation?
I have it on good record from a credible source, that next week's game against CC is going to be a white out.
Hey Anonymous,
Nice comeback. I am sure you can find someone in Denver to tickleyourgonads.I stand corrected DU did not beat CC they tied. My mistake. That however does not take away the fact that CC is probably a better team then Denver. I am glad you are rooting for Wisconsin to kick the snot out of UND. It really won't matter because CC will throttle you and we won't have to win one game next week and we still clinch McNaughton. Oh well here is to getting bounced in the first NCAA regional. You do know that will happen to the Pio holes don't you.
"Pio holes..."
That's funny. Did you make that up yourself or did your mom help with that one?
