Reaction To DU Lacrosse Signing Bill Tierney

"Jamie Munro did a fabulous job taking this program [DU lacrosse] from Division II to Division I to the NCAA Tournament. This isn’t like when I came to Princeton. I’m at a program that’s already established, and whatever problems it may have had recently don’t bother me. This is a great school with a great education, with scholarships and with a lacrosse-only stadium."
-New DU Lax Coach Bill Tierney

Inside Lacrosse had an exclusive interview with Bill Tierney.

LaxPower looks at the Tierney signing.

The Denver Post has a brief recap of the signing.

The Washington Times is skeptical that Tierney will be able to bring a championship to the Rockies.

Inside Lacrosse Blog says that DU's recruiting is going to get an immediate boost from the hire.

There is no joy in New Jersey as the news of Tierney's departure sinks in.

I have a friend that knows a guy, who has a cousin that knows somebody, that says that Tierney chose DU because Boone is Back!!!!

I was hoping that Tierney was Pro-Boone.

That seals it for me. Great hire. :-)

So exactly when is Coombe retiring?

It appears that DU is really elevating their athletic programs

Coombe played a big role in this hire since the cash for the contract had to come from somewhere.

Sounds like Broncos owner & DU Board member Pat Bowlen also played a role. I'm guessing we'll see DU playing marquee east coast opponents at Invesco Field in the near future.

Wow, I don't know much about lax and its coaching legends, but this sounds great for DU!

There is great potential for DU to convert hockey fans into lax fans due to the similarities in the games.

Hockey & hoops doesn't share the same synergy, hockey & lax do.

Lacrosse comes out of Canada,as does hockey. This move is very significant. I am shocked that Coombe approved it since it comes with a total estimated expenditure of around 400k.In the hard times that D.U. is facing I find it hard to believe that the pin head would go for it. I now officialy promote him from 100% pin head to 90%.

DU's athletic budget is $23 million, so finding some extra money for the bringing in a coach of Tierney's stature is not that hard to do financially.

DU knows that elevating athletic programs is decent way to raise brand recognition.

Having a great lax program is very strategic for DU, becuase lacrossee attracts the precise student and alumni pool that DU is after - affluent, eastern-connected, and able to help put DU on the map in the East.
