You can't talk about DU hockey and not mention the Border Bar & Restaurant within a block of Magness Arena. On Sunday night The Border closed forever, a victim of an overzealous Denver Liquor Control Board ruling. It was often said, "The Border was not classy enough to be classified as a sleaze bar."
The closing however is not sad news for everyone. DU athletic coaches will sleep better at night knowing their players will no longer be involved in dust-ups in The Border's parking lot or hooking up with co-eds during last call.
It was an infamous incident at the Border in 2008 that probably led to the eventual firing of DU lacrosse coach Jamie Munro and charges being filed against two of his players. A 23-year-old female, who happened to be a DU alum, were allegedly attacked by a group of lacrosse players while they were leaving the Border late at night.
Who can forget when DU goaltender Chris Burns was stabbed during a wild 75 person melee back in 1994. Naturally it was business as usual the next night and another fight broke out. Burns finished his career with a 4.72 GAA and and .842 Save Percentage. Numbers that are eerily similar to young Adam Murray's stats.
So they may close The Border but they can't take away our memories. Post your favorite Border memories below.

i can't believe it. is this some kind of joke? Crazy if its true. Now where are all the under-age kids going to get there drink on. sad day at du. although watch the stadium, stick-e, and jordans rake in the dough.
Simple memories from the mid-1980's...
$2.50 pitchers.
$1.90 smothered bean burritos.
So much smoke you couldn't breath.
Before a game, who could ask for anything more?
Amazing they stayed open this long (meaning since the drinking age has been 21). Its been the underage place to go for along time, I wonder where they will show up next (although stadium has lots of underage, they average it out with the old drunks that are there all afternoon, so if they go by average age of drinkers, the denver police should leave them alone LOL).
The people who worked at the Border claimed on facebook that they were targeted by the Liquor Control Board.
DG--what's the source of your info that the Border is "closed forever"? What's the ruling that you mention, how did you hear about it, etc.? I think we need some of the 5 "W's" of journalism--who, what, where, when, why. :)
Shame on you for making me work so hard. What are these "Five W's" you speak of?
OK....

You can't miss the irony of the story about the Border, a place that irresponsibly over-served underage drinkers and that led to many a fight and assaults (including the mentioned ones involving DU athletes)
being right above the unfortunate story involving people at the UND-UM game, that incident clearly involved overzealous fans, not sure if alcohol was involved in that but the story does note the underage drinking citations.
maybe we should just talk hockey...and remember, no matter how big a fan you are, its just a game!
When a fan almost dies at a WCHA hockey game, I think its kind of an important story.
When the WCHA doesn't follow the lead of the NFL and set up a "fan code of conduct" at its hockey games, its an important story.
When a fan leaving a WCHA hockey game can be assaulted just because of the color of the sweater its an important story.
Sports blogs are written by fans, for fans and usually detail the fan experence. Newspapers write about the sporting events. We write about the "fan experience."
Sports blogs have become popular because the fans want to read about themselves or people with similar interests. Plus we can devote far more time and energy to topics of interest than can the Denver Post.
2004 National Championship at the Border was fantastic. What I remember of it anyway. :)
And then there was the 2005 Championship game at the Border ... just .. wow.
Good times .. good times...
Wednesday nights at the Border in the mid-Eighties were pretty crazy. We'd start at the DU bar in the Driscoll Center and end up at the Border.
Since there were no classes on Friday, and we blew off most classes on Thursday, Wednesday was the de facto beginning of the weekend.
That might help explain the 2.5 GPA & the five year plan.
I of course have my own memories of the Border aka Booty, when I was looking for housing it had to be within wheelbarrow distance...
I was 18 when I first blacked out at the border. Mind erasers and liquid cocaine's....I was lights out in 20 minutes. Needless to say, I came back for more.
Thanks to the booty, I still haven't graduated.
