Missing two of its best players, Anthony Maiani (3 game suspension) and Patrick Wiercioch (flu), the University of Denver held on for a 3-2 exhibition victory on Sunday night in Magness Arena. The game wasn't as close as the score would indicate.
DU scored three power play goals in the first 30 minutes and the Dinos answered with two late goals in the Third Period. DU outshot Calgary 40-14 in a game that Denver controlled a majority of the play.
DU Captain Rhett Rakhshani kicked off his Senior season with three assists. Power play goals were tallied by Tyler Ruegsegger, Kyle Ostrow and Joe Colborne.
Highly touted Freshmen defensemen Matt Donovan and William Wrenn also tallied assists for DU.

Nice exhibition win for DU over a clearly overmatched but pesky Calgary team. I felt like the game could have been 10-0 after 2 periods, based on DU's dominance, but that's hockey. At times Calgary played a very effective physical and tight-checking game.
I was impressed with DU's freshmen.
Good to see the boys in action tonight. Joe C was the most impressive in my opinion. He's in excellent shape and played with a ton of confidence. Kyle O looked great as well. Shore lives up to the hype too. Conditioning looked like a factor in the third--not much gas left in the tank.
What do Anthony M do to land a three game seat?
Paulgaard was TERRIBLE. The first Dino goal was his fault...he smacked it off his stick, then ricochetted it off of his glove, then into the net...
A good first effort for the Pios:
Here's what we learned:
1) Rock and Colborne looked great together.
2) Chevy and Murray looked fine. Paulgaard is still the Norwegian Nightmare.
3. Donovan is top 6 right now, and Wrenn isn't far behind.
4. DU is going to be very good on the PP.
5. Shore has some serious wingspan, but needs to watch the turnovers.
6. Philips looked a little tentative
7.Ruegsegger had a nice goal tonight, but was not as confident on the puck as usual. Poor effort on the breakaway.
8. J-Mart got tossed around tonight
9. DU is really quick out of the zone
10. Calgary is a hard team to play. They finish checks....
I liked the WCHA answer to poor officiating over the past couple of years... just take the names off the uniforms. It's still easy to tell them apart though. Mousseaux (sp?) still has fun with the players. Keltie still shakes his head at the calls Swaider makes. And Swaider... well like they say, you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
DU looked great through the first two periods. Calgary was working hard with the checks and getting in the way during the 3rd. Everything I would have expected from an exhibition game...GO DU!
Maiani "broke a team rule."
Nothing more was disclosed and probably due to privacy issues nothing else will be released, unless Maiani talks to the media.
Where was Boone?
Boone was serving a one game suspension along with Maiani. Just kidding.
He'll have his introduction next weekend against Vermont. :-)
If you're looking for defensive weakness = look somewhere else; because from what I saw, this team is super-sized and double-stacked...and that's not even including Patty. This defense will be outstanding.
I agree that D should be awesome. One thing I noticed on the PP was they were very quick to shoot. Which I love but I suspect George will coach that out of them. I hate his style of PP coaching. He teaches them to pass the puck till everyone in the building has yelled shoot the "f"ing puck at least 3 times! You could see last night what their instinct was.
D--will Boone talk to the media about his errant ways the led to his suspension?
