WJT: USA Stuns Canada 6-5 In Overtime

(above) A nation in mourning

From: Los Angeles Times

Team USA ended Canada's five-game title streak Tuesday night in dramatic fashion, recording a 6-5 overtime victory over the favored Canadians in the gold medal game of the world junior championships at Saskatoon, Canada.

John Carlson, a Washington Capitals draft pick, beat Canadian goalie Martin Jones in overtime to give the U.S. its first world junior crown since 2004.

It was an entertaining game from start to finish, though the goaltending was so shaky that both teams went to their backups in the late stages. And nice to see most of the Canadian crowd stay to watch the medal ceremony -- and to see the U.S. players signing as the national anthem was played in their honor.

University of Denver Freshman Matt Donovan (3g, 2a) will return to campus this week with a shiny new gold medal and a lifetime of memories. 2010 DU recruit Jason Zucker (2g, 0a) will go back to high school with his medal, awaiting the NHL Draft this summer.

Great job by Team USA.

Donovan & Zucker went from longshots of even making the team to frontline players throughout the Tourney.

Great to see Donovan on the ice to start the overtime.

Every American Junior team to win gold (2004, 2010) has had a Pioneer on the squad.

To win this game in Canada's house is simply fantastic.

Man that felt so good see our flag a bit higher then Canada and to hear our anthem play. :D

Lots of respect for the Canadian team. Though to the Canadian fans who talk crap about US hockey and the NCAA I hope that was a kick to the crotch. I've seen a lot of that recently and I hope that shut them up taking both the Under 17 and the World Jr title.

The last two gold medal teams also Fighting Sioux players as well. There were three fighting Sioux on the 2004 WJC team and one on the 2010 WJC team. It was a very fun game to watch but also very nerve racking. Donovan is pretty good defender.

That was one of the best hockey games of the year! There were 2 of us watching in the Blue Moon B&G but by the second period, everyone in the place was watching.

I don't think Patrick Wiercioch is too upset any more.......

Congrats to Donovan and Zucker and the rest of Team USA!!!

Those two teams were so evenly matched and what athrill it must be for the USA boys to win on Canada's home turf.

Didn't Donovan get caught out of position on the tying goal?

Nonetheless a great win for US Hockey!

Interesting what can happen when you get a very good coach who is allowed to pick his own team rather than have one dictated by the USA Hockey political machine.

Look for Dean to end up at Minny. DU better be ready next season because change is in the air in the WCHA.

It looked like it was Donovan's man to me, but Campbell didn't help matters lying on his back.

One of the most impressive things this week was how good Donovan looked being paired with Cam Fowler. There is talk that Fowler may go #1 overall in the NHL Draft. Like Tyler Bozak, Fowler makes everyone around him better. What a thrill for Donovan to spend a few weeks paired with a player of that ability.

Yeah, a bit of egg (and perhaps backbacon) on the faces of the Canadian selection committee eh?

Isn't Carle the only American to win a gold at the juniors and win a NCAA national championship in the same year?

Here's to Donovan joining him come April.

Will airport security let Matt carry-on his medal???

Which Matt? Apparently it's good for DU to recruit "Matt's!"

Also, if you haven't seen it, check out DU's athletic site for an awesome picture of Gwoz taking care of business with Scott...

I actually emailed the staff and asked them to change the picture! We'll see if they do or not...

Sweet, sweet victory! What a finish for our guys to cap off an outstanding tournament. I hope this is a premonition of things to come for USA Hockey.
