Campus Lounge Adds ESPN-U For DU Fans

DU vs. RIT Friday @ 1 PM MT

Perhaps the oldest and most famous DU hockey watering hole added a new wrinkle yesterday. The Campus Lounge ordered ESPN-U so University of Denver hockey fans could watch all the exciting NCAA hockey action this weekend.

The Campus is owned by DU hockey legend and former Chicago Blackhawk Jim Wiste. He twice was an All-American at DU, scoring 139 career points. With Wiste and Cliff Koroll as captains, the 1968 Pioneers won the NCAA championship, beating North Dakota 4-0 with Gerry Powers in goal in the title game.

Wiste played for the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks and earned a ring when Chicago won its first Original Six championship. His professional career included stops with Vancouver and the New York Rangers, and Cleveland and Indianapolis in the World Hockey Association.

I'm interested in finding out who is going to be there this weekend...

I was born and grew up in the metro Denver area. When I was growing up, my parents used to drive past this place on our way to the Tattered Cover book store in Cherry Creek. I always saw the "campus" name and said to myself "someday, when I'm in college, I'm going to check that place out." Even after spending 4 years at DU, I never managed to take that trip.

Maybe it's time to change that. Anyone else in?

I was disappointed in the service the last time I went. I think I'll be hanging out at Sobo 151. Great Hockey Bar!

Many great memories of the Campus Lounge.

I used to meet former DU scorekeeper Jim White there everytime I came into Denver. Boy did he have DU hockey stories.

I heard a group of former DU hockey players will be there on Friday.

Just start a LetsGoDU hockey table. Leave a pitcher of beer on the table and you'll attract people like flies. Wear a DU hockey jersey or a Boone shirt and you'll find each other. :-)

Choppers has 50 plus inch T.V.s and good food. I agree with achsdu
about the food at Campus. Choppers gets ESPNU-hell they can raise up any sports channel in the country.
They are just west of Cherry Creek shopping center between the center and colorado bulevard.
Prediction:D.U.6 R.I.T.1
Book Detroit!!

Does this mean DG is buying the first beers?

What has Chopper's or Sobo 151 ever done for DU Hockey ?

dggoddard said...

DG will be in Albany. :-)

Sobo has great beer and food and caters to hockey fans. What else do you want??

I agree with the previous poster. You can watch the game where ever you like, but Jim Wiste has been supporting DU hockey for over 40 years. Season tickets, hosting alumni events, bringing former and current NHL players over to DU.

You can all go to your favorite trendy foo-foo bars and drink your foreign beers with your pinkies out. I will continue to support a bar that supports DU hockey and is owned by a DU alum.

Where ever we all go this friday, lets agree to all meet in Detroit in two weeks.

I've never watched a game at Sobo or Choppers so I can't speak to them. But, I used to go to various sports bars that were close to my home or work to watch games every now and then. No where else compares to the Campus. When you're at the other bars no one gives a shit about DU and you're the only one excited in the whole bar when DU scores. At the campus, everyone is a DU fan and the experience is so much more enjoyable.

Jimmy is a great guy and I can tell you all from having spent some time with him that he bleeds the DU colors through and through. The next time I'm in Denver, I'll definitely stop in and say hello.

BTW DG, you're buying the first round of drinks when DU gets to Detroit next month.

Attn: Last Minute Shoppers

Priceline.com can get you airfare to and from Denver to Albany on Wed.-Sun. and staying at a fleabag motel for $620.

If you have two people its $60 cheaper or you can stay at a better hotel for slightly more.

DJ

Detroit sounds like its going to be expensive for me.

Although some of the waitresses at the Campus can be a little rough around the edges, I agree that the Campus deserves the business of DU hockey fans more than places like Choppers or Sobo 151. And the comment above is true--it's more fun to watch the games with other people who give a damn about what's happening on the ice. I was at the best place to watch the 2004 national championship (in Boston). But I heard the Campus Lounge was the 2nd best place to be.

There are "sports bars" and there are "hockey bars". The Campus is the "DU hockey bar". I remember when Jim bought the bar and how it immediately became the place for the alums and the pro teams when they came into town. I would say he is having a good run with the place.

The smugness around here is amazing. Lots of smelly farts.

Sobo is a great hockey bar. The food is excellent, and if you like the original Czech pilsner, it's a great hangout. But for DU hockey you can't beat Campus.

I'll go to Campus Lounge, thanks. For the regionals in 2005, we went to Choppers. We called ahead to make sure they would be showing the game that night and they said yes. They had the two NCAA basketball games on every TV when we got there a half hour before DU's game started. After getting seated and ordering our food, we politely asked them to put one TV that we could see from our table on the DU game. They didn't do it, and so we asked a second time to talk to the manager in order to make sure we got the DU game since it had already started. He said that they couldn't do it until after the basketball was over because people wanted to see hoops, which meant we missed a good part of the first period while every single TV was tuned to one of two basketball games. Way to give the customer what they want, Choppers. Haven't been back since.
