DU Lax Falls To Stoney Brook

From: LaxPower.com

The No. 9 University of Denver men's lacrosse team (12-5, 7-0 ECAC) fell 9-7 to the Stony Brook University Seawolves (13-3) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday evening at LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook, N.Y., in front of a crowd of 4,262 fans.

"Hats off to the Stony Brook players and coaches for playing us hard and really making it difficult for us out there," said head coach Bill Tierney. "Despite the loss, I am so happy for the way this team came together this season and for the sacrifices they made to get to this point. Our group of seniors provided great leadership to this team this year and their example will provide guidance for our program for years to come." (read rest of article)

Yuck, another 1st round exit for a DU team.

Baby steps.Everyone expects instant gratification. This was a very good year and the foundation is laid.

For sure. The program has a ton of momentum and the sky is the limit. Nobody should be dissappointed with this loss. The fact that they made it here is nothing short of remarkable. Sub-500 season the year before, firing of the coach and several players being dismissed from the team.

With that said, part of me definitely agrees with the first post. This game was within their grasps and they let it slip away. With DU hockey, Broncos, Avs, Nuggets and pretty much every other team I have rooted for this year having an early exit, I'm looking forward to the summer and not paying any attention to sports. (Well, except for the World Cup which I'm very excited about even though that is likely to end in much the same fashion as the above mentioned seasons)

Come on now, folks. For DU just to be in the top 16 is incredible. This is a program that is still very young, has to travel thousands of miles for most of its games, had a mutiny and coaching change last year and still managed to give Stony Brook all it wanted on its home field.

When Tierney gets the players he wants, teams are going to need to come out here to play in the NCAAs, and we'll be waiting for them.

Bravo to the Pioneers, 2010 ECAC Champions.

Speaking of thousands of miles travelled, how many thousands of dollars has DU forced into the lax program? New lax-only stadium, top coach, travel every weekend to the east coast, equipment, none of that is cheap for a school to do. I'm sure there are better ways to use that money... I love lacrosse, I'm from a big lacrosse area out east, but I'd rather see DU use that money to lower my tuition.

hey anonymous wish my schooling was less money. Maybe you should do things that are healthier for your brain. I sure hope you are not setting your sights on being a CPA.

DU has an $850 million budget of which all of sports is maybe $25 million - small potatoes.

Lacrosse actually pulls in more money to DU than it costs.

There are only 12.6 scholarships and 43 players (most of whom come from affluent families) so about at least 25-30 players are probably paying full pop to attend DU - 50K+ annually. That's probably well over a million in tuition revenue to DU alone to attract kids that would probably go elswhere.

DU is 56% female and 44% male, and they need sports to attract male applicants.

For DU, they NEED those full-paying males to offset the diversity they want. Lax is a good tool to attract that crowd.

There's no doubt that the Lax program is bringing national publicity to the school.

The lacross program (stadium, etc.) by the massive donation of a wealthy alum. Don't believe that it has to rely on DU for any funding.

DU has gotten some great coverage in the national press with the hiring of Coach T.Can't put a price on that sort of publicity, but it has to be favorable.

I love college sports, I am a DU hockey season ticket holder (for over ten years) and hope Lax continues to improve. But these arguments about cost-benefit at silly. College sports at most all schools, including DU is a big deficit. The donor gave enough cash for PART of the lax stadium, not the increased expenditures. The only (financial) hope at a private school like DU is that athletics (Hockey/lax) increase the applicant pool, which I suspect hockey and lax does (particularly amongst the full tuition paying folks) (why we try at hoops is silly, never will compete).

But back to the original thread here... congrats to DU lax on a solid season, and heres to hoping you become like hockey where we are disappointed with anything but a championship
