The important thing that DU gets out of the WAC is a recruiting footprint that includes Texas and Northern California as well as other Western states.

This should also help DU to draw more of the student body from these regions as well.

DU will still have one more year in the Sun Belt (next year). The Pioneers will joing the WAC in July of 2012.

I don't think DU has a problem drawing kids from Texas and California into the student body...

DU doesn't have trouble drawing Texans and Californians, but those two areas are critical to DU's future, and DU will need them more than ever.

There simply aren't enough Colorado kids who can afford the full-pop DU tuition fees, so DU will always need affluent Californians and Texans in order to offset the diversity they crave.

California and Texas both far more multicultural than Colorado including 2nd & 3rd Generation minorities who may be in a better position to attend a private university.

DU is converting the ice to basketball at Magness Arena to create a better backdrop for the News Conference today.

I would expect DU hoops to be the visual backdrop they would want at the news conference. This is a big day for DU, and ice isn't yet part of the WAC sports menu....

Looks like Montana is going to stay in the Big Sky Conference, so Seattle will be the 10th school.

Seattle and the State of Washington are probably a better fit for DU than Montana.

Seattle is private Jesuit school with 7,500 students.

To recap ... DU joins Hawaii, Louisiana Tech, Idaho, New Mexico State, Utah State, San Jose State, Texas-San Antonio, Texas State & Seattle

Seattle u. is a big improvement over Montana. It is a fine liberal arts school constructed in the mold of Jesuit education. It is much closer to D.U. academics then Montana.

RE: Converting Magness for the press conference...

An expensive, BUT SMART move... It would have been a shame for the story to have been about how a hockey-only school is joining a better conference instead of about how an up-and-coming athletic program is bringing commitment and resources to the WAC.

That's TWO smart moves in one day DU... You still have a few hours left.... Affirm Boone as official and we'll call it a hat trick!
