According to several DU students on Facebook, the administration of the University of Denver has approved a request to name Denver Boone the Official "Student" Mascot of the university. The news is posted on Boone's Facebook Page.
Although details of the agreement have yet to be made public, it should mean more access for Boone at DU sporting events and hopefully merchandise sales. Thanks go out to student leaders on campus who worked over the summer to make this a reality.
Boone's Wikipedia page has the details of Boone's history at the University of Denver and the controversy arose in 2008. In 2009 after the administration vetoed Boone's return as official mascot, twenty DU alums, students and fans contributed $6,000 to design and build the Boone costume.
Boone's appearance at the 2011 Baltimore Final Four Lacrosse Championship may have played a role in today's decision. Boone was featured on the Baltimore Raven's Jumbotron, posed for hundreds of photos and showed the administration what a powerful brand he could be for the university.

Wow, that's great news. Slowly but surely DU is being dragged into the 21st century. Hats off to DG and everyone involved. Keep up the good work. It ain't easy I know, like bailing out the Cherry Creek reservoir with a #10 can, but this shows that occasionally the hard work pays off. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Any defenition yet on what a student mascot is?
Somewhere between 'unnoficial: (We're not paying for him but we'll look the other way while you alumni pay for him) and official (We'll financially support him and promote him?).

6:38, you nailed it on the head! The only way they'll let Boone on the ice, is during open skate at Joy Burns, or on the "Skate with the Pioneers" night. too much liability, being the wishy-washy deal that it is in the first place. But I agree 100%; nothing like a full-blown mascot program to light up a crowd. It's a staple of many hockey leagues. Very entertaining.

Brings up a good point. How cool would it be to get the CC mascot and Boone together, for the games this season, in both buildings? Not sure if CC's Tiger is "Official" - so that probably is a bunch of red tape. But people would go berzerk to see a little innocent and well-intended interaction between the two. On-ice would be best; or even in the concourse during intermission. I HIGHLY suggest you look into it. A collabaration would really be exciting. And it wouldn't have to be violent or get out of hand

I'm hearing the following from a source within the DU Athletic Department:
This "official student mascot" designation changes precisely NOTHING.
Boone will NOT be allowed on the ice; his image will NOT be permitted on "official" DU uniforms, merchandise or communications; and he will receive absolutely NO legitimization by the administration.
Though it may well be a small second step in the "official" return of Boone; as of right now, this is purely semantics.

Ok but I think you miss an important point. To me this says that they are officially killing the chicken That alone is a significant improvement. We should hold a burial service for the chicken.
Doesn't have to change anything. Boone getting on the ice is irrelevant to his validity (we have clearly established that) and us selling his merchandise vs them sell stuff with him on it is their loss.
Battle over. No need to rub anything in the administration's faces and no need to expect them to publicly fall on their swords. We've been the bigger people all along, let's stay that way.
Let's celebrate our victory with a beer and let all sides feel secure in the outcome. Peace is a good thing.

It just seemed like people were getting ahead of themselves regarding the significance and meaning of this whole thing, with visions of Boone battling Prowler for mascot supremacy on the ice at Magness.
Honestly, folks, it ain't gonna happen.
That said, there is something about this whole situation I feel can't possibly be stressed too much. With DG's help, the administration and students at DU accomplished something amazing: The complete and utter marginalization of a small and vocal group of obnoxious PC thugs; while still giving them EXACTLY what they wanted.
When was the last time THAT happened at a non-military university in the US???
Well at the very least, I suggest a little fun with a competition between CC and DU this year to see who can make the best life-sized replica head of each other's mascot? Right out of Slapshot II.... wouldn't it be awesome (for CC fans) for someone in the World Arena student section to hold up a Boone head? The student's wold love it. Same at Magness - someone hold up Tigger's head, maybe swing a bat at it... the place would go nuts. Get your paper mechet supplies ready.... who's in?
