Clarion Profiles DU's Finnish Import In Goal

(above) Freshman Juno Olkinoura plans to battle for playing time this season
Juho Olkinuora wasn't always destined to play hockey at DU, but after coming to the United States four years ago to pursue his hockey career, Olkinuora is excited to be suiting up at the Division I level for the Pioneers.

Olkinuora, like most collegiate and professional hockey players, started playing hockey as a young child in his hometown of Helsinki, Finland. However, unlike his teammates, he came from an area known for strong competition on the international level to play a position few in the world can perfect: goalie [read entire article].

Juho looked pretty good in his 25 minute DU debut (third period + OT).

He got beat on a breakaway on a nice shot, but had some very good saves from close-in shots and rebounds late in the contest and in the OT vs McGill.

I'm sure the "USA" chants coming from the student section made him feel really welcome.

I too was pleasantly surprised by him, considering I knew nothing about him. He's every bit as big as Sam Brittain, if not bigger. The number on the front of his jersey is about as high as the top goal post of the net. Very tall person, he is. I'll be watching to see how he progresses in practices in the coming weeks, once Adam settles into a weekliy routine. Who knows, they might just put Olkie in, if Adam's game starts to go away. And from what I saw, I'd be very confident if that did happen.

He shows more promise than the Norwegian Nightmare ever did.

Didn't someone get in trouble for saying Murray wasn't a D-1 goalie? Something along the lines of - if you don't have something nice to say .....

Juho's play in his first game at DU was

Well, Juho appears to be a very nice young man.

That's a joke boy.

Is the Clarion reporter breaking news? "While last year's starting goalie Sam Brittain will miss the entire 2011-2012 season due to a torn ACL, which he suffered over the summer,"

Viz, Sam's recovery is coming right along according to all reports. Clarion isn't breaking any news about Sam. He will be back in mid-January if all goes according to plan.

I saw Sam at the game Saturday and he was not on crutches or anything and appeared to be walking well.

ISay ISay - are you breaking news? I can think of somebody who doesn't post here anymore because of a threat they received. I can also seem to recall that person saying something to the effect that Murray hasn't proven himself to D1 caliber as of yet.

Are you suggesting that these two events are connected?

No way!!!

Somebody received a threat??

It can't be the USCHO posters' crutch can it??

Well, those USCHO people should just step out of their soap opera-laced bubble and think for themselves and realize they will get more respect if they don't lean on someone else for their hockey knowledge and importance.

Come back!!!!!! WEEEE MISSS YOOOUUUUU!!

Getting off this whole threat-related tangent, let me rail the Clarion for a moment. Does NOBODY over there check anything or have any knowledge of how college hockey works?! They're actually running a poll asking what expectations are for the team this season, and two of the answers are "win the division" and "win the conference." Really people? THEY'RE THE SAME THING!!! There are no separate divisions within the WCHA! Come on now, does nobody over there understand this...or take the time to even look it up? So much for teaching quality journalism...
