Murray had a minor injury and was lifted early without letting in a goal.

Juho Olkinuora in as a replacement.

1-0 - Lets hope for a little more offense....

Sam Brittain is a surprisingly good commentator...dude is great on hockey stuff, and he's even able to talk about baseball playoffs knowledgeably. The guys at Root Sports have to be thinking to themselves, "I wonder what this guy's gonna do after his NHL career"

DU needs to get the offense going. So far, three goals in 5 periods....

dggoddard said...

Dmen look good. Forwards, not so much.

PK looks awesome. Larazza has looked solid.

DU has lots of tough decisions on the 3rd & 4th lines to make in time for next week.

DU annd #5 UNM tied 2-2 with 25 minutes left...

Anonymous said...

The team has let in 2 goals in 6 periods. Do that all season, and the team will be just fine...

DU lost in soccer, 3-2 to UNM, giving up the game winner in the 85th minute a tough loss for the Pios....

Anonymous said...

No shame in that loss...New Mexico is ranked #5, and their recruits are insanely good. The fact that the Pios were very competitive tonight shows that they're quickly gaining in ability and respect nationally. That'll definitely help them in recruiting and therefore improving.

Good game at Magness against the Under 18 Penalty Box Development team. I thought Olki looked good in net. PP was good. Good to see Beau B net a pair and Larazza's goal was nifty.

Thought Salazar looked sloppy and hopefully sharpens up. Mayfield's a beast but a risk to take a few dumb penalties.

3 Shore's on ice was a treat!

Beau as predicted has raised his game to new level. The shot he buried in the first was better than any shot he had all last season.

Mermis played well tonight. I thought Adam looked a little less solid tonight. He almost gave one up on the low side (his weakest area)early in.

I liked the 9, 17, 23 PP line with 21 on the point. Lee played a little better tonight. It was good to see Didier tonight. Anybody know why Dusty didn't play?

I thought Kelty was pretty weak with his debut wearing the arm band tonight.

"The team has let in 2 goals in 6 periods. Do that all season, and the team will be just fine..."

At Chestnut Hill and Commonwealth Ave it'll be a whole different deck of cards. What's the TV coverage looking like. I was in Burlington for the road opener with DG and Swami last year. I wish it could be a tradition.

It was funny to see Q and N on the opening face-off they we're having a blast banging sticks. great to see all the Pios hugging Q and Gwoz coaching him after the game. Had to be really cool for the family.

I thought the U-18 team played us tough and hung close much of the game.

Agreed. I've come to realize that he is not on the same level talent wise but he plays with a ton of heart. I think he can be very effective feeding the puck of the corner.

Saw a bit of the hockey game, and all of the soccer game. Olki looked good, and had one great save in the third. Mayfield looked large. As to soccer, that one stung. DU had an own goal, it looked like a handball that wasn't called on unm's first goal, and a horrible defensive lapse led to unm's third goal. Plus, DU had a shot careen off the crossbar in the first half. DU was as skilled as umm, too bad they couldn't get the win. But it was a good crowd.

Competitive, hard-fought game at Magness tonight. I enjoyed watching the U-18s--they have some speedy forwards who can skate and hit and some good size d-men who look like good prospects.

DU played a decent game and had some good sequences. Bennett definitely looks improved over last year, and DU has some kids who aren't afraid to play in the corners and throw their weight around. I like that this year's team appears more physical than teams in previous years.

Into the hornet's nest next weekend in Boston.......

Larraza says in his post game interview that 31 won't make the trip to Boston that Hope travels instead. Anybody know why?

update from Chamber's blog. Weird twist to start the season.

http://blogs.denverpost.com/colleges/category/hockey/

THE PLOT THICKENS: Junior Zack Hope, a 5-foot-7, 145-pounder donning blue pads, finished the game for the Pioneers. Why? Because he will be DU’s backup (or starting?) goalie in next Friday’s season opener at Boston College. No kidding. DU coach George Gwozdecky revealed that Olkinuora will serve a three-game eligibility suspension to begin his NCAA career and Hope — who was just a DU student the past two years — will at the very least be the backup.

Anonymous said...

What in the holy name of crap is going on with the eligibility issues? That's terrible. Who oversees this stuff for the team? Right now Zack has the winningest percentage of all 4 DU goalies combined, on the season

dggoddard said...

Sounds like Murray will be fine and will start next weekend.

Juho's eligibility issues are described by Chambers...

"He played in some leagues in Finland that some of the players might not have been considered amateurs,” Gwozdecky said of his Finnish goalie who was unsigned in the summer after playing for Sioux Falls of the USHL last season. “The NCAA has ruled on his eligibility. He’s got to sit the first three regular-season games and then he’s ready to go.”

Looks like DU's opponent next Friday night are already firing on all cylinders.

Boston College defeated Michigan State 5-2 in Grand Forks at the Ice Breaker Tourney. They scored three third period goals to break open the game.

I have two words for anyone that has anything to say about Salazar...

Anonymous said...

BBM- Bring it on tough guy.

Anonymous said...

There's nothing to debate when it comes to Salazar. He is what he is....a small dude who has some offensive skills, isn't exceptionally quick, needs a playmaker to set him up, and doesn't do well in tight quarters. What you see is what you get. He probably gets the most out of his ability but will never be an elite player.

BC demolished North Dakota 6-2 in Grand Forks, while BU crushed UNH 5-0 in Boston.

DU will have it's work cut out for it next weekend in Boston...

Story and video highlights of BC/girls game. BC turned it on quick.

BU rolled over UNH 5 nil. Jumping into the fire is the only way to start the season. GO PIOS!

meh...who cares what anyone did to anyone...what I care about is what happens WHEN IT HAPPENS, talk to me after DU plays whomever, not before...

Anonymous said...

Looks like we should be #1 next week sure will be nice to go to Boston, and pick up two easy wins..

Anonymous said...

BC will be #1. DU will be lucky to split.

Anonymous said...

Split BU is not very good and CC beat the crap out of BC last year and we beat the crap out of CC last year so 2 wins

Anonymous said...

BU just waxed UNH at BU last weekend, 5-0.

BC just waxed UND in Grand Forks, 6-2.

DU will be very lucky to split this weekend in Boston.
