Beau Bennett To Miss Next 6 to 8 Weeks

From: DenverPioneers.com

University of Denver sophomore forward Beau Bennett (Gardena, Calif.) is expected to miss at a minimum the next six to eight weeks with a wrist injury, DU head coach George Gwozdecky announced Friday afternoon.

Bennett had successful surgery on Thursday, Dec. 8 to repair a ruptured tendon in his wrist, he originally injured during practice on Wednesday, Oct. 26. Bennett missed four games with the injury, but returned to the DU lineup on Saturday, Nov. 12 against in-state rival Colorado College.

“Beau has courageously played the last three weeks with the wrist injury,” Gwozdecky said. “However, we felt surgery was necessary for Beau’s short and long-term career. We look forward to his return to our lineup in the second half of the season.”;

Bennett, a 2010 first round NHL draft pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has 13 points (4g, 9a) in 10 games for the No. 13 Pioneers (6-5-3). Bennett has 38 points (13g, 25a) in 47 career games for DU.

Terrible news for the Pios.

Not only do we miss his talent, but it screws up the PP and the DU lines as well.

Someone will need to step up. I am looking right at you, Luke Salazar. And Danny Doremus. And Chris Knowlton.

Holy crap. I was feeling pretty good about this team and then this kick in the nuts. Bennett has been great this year and is a key cog in this wheel. Other guys have to step up.

Really tough blow for both Beau and the Pios. It is going to tough next week at St Cloud with Bennett and Zucker out of the lineup. I haven't heard but I suspect that Ryder will be out until mid January, Salazar unfortunately has been inconsistent this year. Time for him to step up and show us the same playing level we saw his Freshman year.

Zucker will be there for St. both Cloud games. He has special permission from Team USA to arrive in camp on that Sunday.

As a two time team member, Blais knows what Zucker brings to the table.

The bigger problem is the Dec 30 game against #10 which has big PWR implications.

I hate to throw a guy under the bus, but I'm not holding my breath on Salazar. He's seemingly in and out of the doghouse, and his inconsistency is frustrating. I'm more confident in Ostrow, Knowlton, Mermis, and Nick Shore as guys who can elevate their game while Bennett is out. Hopefully Doremus and Larazza can chip in as well.

On the pre-game radio show on Friday's Bemidji , Gwoz said he thinks it will likely be 10-14 weeks until Bennett's return, and not 6-8 weeks.

This could be a serious blow to DU chances for "something special".

I got a serious blow from a hottie tonight and blew something special on her face. Is this like what you are talking about?

Somethings fishy with this injury. Conrad Murray is the only doctor I know of that would let a ruptured tendon go 5-6 weeks without being repaired. This is serious stuff. Would the same thing happen to Bennett if it were an achilles tendon??? The longer a tendon goes unattached, the more it shrinks and the repairs become that much more serious. I hope he's ok and able to come back full strength in time for summer shinny!!! This is not good.

Likely a TFCC injury - much different from achilles, etc. J-M Liles had a similar problem a few years ago when he played for the Avs

Fishy? An MRI would discover this type of injury. That would be typical protocol when you have a cut from a skate.1)Clean and close wound 2)MRI and evaluation from a specialist to assure no nerve or tendon damage. No damage, 7-10 days.Damage, surgical repair asap.to minimize tendon or nerve retraction and facilitate the rehab process. The question is, when did the MRI take place, who evaluated and who gave clearance to play as that is the last thing the player should do.The previous post indicated that the injury occured 5-6 weeks ago. Something is not correct here or did the injury just occur?

Maybe the injury was borderline, the player wanted to play and the doctors/coaches cleared him - then the injury worsened with additional play?

That seems very plausible to me, but I am not a doctor.

I would never clear a patient wth a ruptured tendon, especially an athelete .Repair asap and rehab as well as full recovery are greatly enhanced. The longer you prolong this process, the more difficult the surgical repair and rehab.Additionally,Full range of motion can be severely compromised if surgery is delayed.
