Boone Makes The Hockey News In Retro Article

Published in Canada, The Hockey News is considered to be the Bible of hockey coverage.  This week (The Hockey News, April 2, 2012) Ryan Kennedy wrote an article and ran a photo of DU's uniforms back the '70s.

We're going to continue the fight to bring Boone back as DU's official mascot and return our hockey sweaters to national prominence.

Doug Berry was a very good player. Remember him well.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Back in the day, most thought Boone was too cartoony...

But after the bird disaster that Ritchie and Murphy force fed us, the Boone looks so much better...

Agree with 1:58. I didn't like Boone when I came DU (before the bird). I immediately became a big fan when they took him away though. Because they weren't just taking away Boone, they were taking away a part of the history and great tradition of DU.

Add to it that the bird was even worse, the Boone momentum became unstoppable.

I like Boone so much now that I want one of those jerseys. Really bad. Anyone know how to get one?

Boone was never modeled on Daniel Boone.

Disney called him "Pioneer" in the 1968 design, and the students named home "Denver Boone" after a naming contest,

If the university sold 'em, they could probably pay for the tuition hike quickly.

Boonetown,

That's the point we need to keep hammering home. DU is leaving hundreds of thousands of merchandising dollars on the table.

Money that could be used for so many things. Pay increases for our coaches, charter flights for the hockey team, expansion of locker rooms, upgrading the Video Score Board at Magness, Video replay board for lacrosse stadium, expanding lacrosse stadium.

Doug Berry was excellent, so was Ken.

I too would pay real American greenbacks for such a jersey (hint, hint)

No Boone till Coombe meets his doom imho.

I would bet Coombe will be here through 2014, the DU Sesqui-Centennial (150 Years) - that will be be a big year at DU.

Following that, I would expect someone new - perhaps a distiguished global academic leader like DG...

I think the current red tailed hawk (bloody disk-shaped object) that they went with is horrible -- and so does the athletic department. The image has gotten smaller every year on uniforms and most teams try to hide it. We are giving up bucks but the current 'anti-establishment Boone' seems to make him more popular than ever.

The only thing worse would be stealing a tribe name and image that we would have to remove whenever the playoffs came around!

The red-tailed Hawk was 'de-empasized' in 2005-2006 in favor of the arched 'Denver' wordmark and the interlocking 'DU 'letters, which were created in 2007 and 2008respectively.

There are still a few old hawks around, which should be removed, but DU has not been as aggressive in removing them as they should be.

The result is that while the newer identity work is far more prevalent, they could be more cohesive if they 'scrubbed' the Hawks from those few places where they still reside.
