Matt Donovan Recalled By NY Islanders

(above) Matt Donovan was called up to the New York Islanders for the first time on Monday
The New York Islanders announced today that University of Denver alum Matt Donovan has been recalled from loan from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers [AHL].

Donovan, 21, leads all Sound Tigers defensemen in scoring and ranks second overall on the team with 42 points (10 goals, 32 assists). The Edmond, OK, native has more points than all but three defensemen in the AHL.

The Islanders play at the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.

Another Pioneer goes to the show.

For any player, being able to say you played at the top level of the sport is an amazing accomplishment.

Somewhere between 60 and 70 Pioneers have made it to the show.

Congrats to Matt, the first Oklahoman to make it all the way to the top!

not related to Donovan directly (although, it's actually indirectly related)...but, to all those people that say DU can't win a national championship with blue chip NHL recruits and underclassmen. And, especially those who say that you'll never win with underclassmen that have their eyes on the pros. Kentucky just proved you totally right!

Great job. You're soooooooo smart. Those guys clearly just mailed it in during March Madness and only cared about their pro contracts (which the entire starting line-up will sign after this season). They didn't even care! Oh....wait...ooops....nevermind

Islanders Asst coach Doug Weight is well known for "welcoming" and mentoring any college kids who are called up . He takes them under his wing, shows them around, helps them with transportation, lodging. He's always done it - ever since he was signed by the Rangers. A great role model for these kids, Donovan included. played 3 yrs at LSSU, signed by the Rangers, Stanley Cup winner, and inducted into the LSSU HOF - and now behind the bench with an NHL team. Weight is committed to the NCAA recruiting system - and our own Scott Mayfield is a direct result of that. I think you'll see more DU/Islanders activity in the future, thanks to the efforts of guys who "made it" like Weight did.

Tyler Arnason is an Okie that made it before Matt.

Tyler Arnason didn't learn to play hockey in Oklahoma. Maybe born there, but didn't pay hockey there. Slight difference.

Congrats to Matt! Kinda surprised Rhett isn't getting more calls up, too.

Bridgeport is gearing up for the playoffs and Isles are playing out the string this week. Isles are shorthanded on D due to injuries. Matt will return to Bridgeport by the end of the week when the Isle's season ends.
