Party Boy Image Follows College Lacrosse

From: Business Week
by Curtis Eichelberger

Duke University men’s lacrosse coach John Danowski still talks to recruits’ parents about the stripper party that led to false rape allegations six years ago.

University of Virginia coach Dom Starsia won’t grant interview requests about a former player who beat his girlfriend to death two years ago. Johns Hopkins coach Dave Pietramala says a survey that showed lacrosse players are the biggest users of illicit drugs among college athletes was “deeply concerning.”  [read entire article].

Interesting quote from Tierney about sleeping on Saturdau nights with one eye open...I am sure it's the same with Gwoz.

While not necessarily disagreeing with the general point of the argument, it seems unfair to me to tie "lacrosse" into the scandal at Duke and the tragedy at UVA. What happened at Duke was a legal nightmare in which a corrupt DA, seeking a full term in office, was willing to put 3 boys he knew to be innocent in prison for his own career advancement. That doesn't have much to do with LAX from where I sit, because Mike Nifong presumably wouldn't have looked this gift horse in the mouth if the guys had been pole vaulters or swimmers.

While I wouldn't encourage or excuse stripper parties, it should be noted for the record that there were a couple of dozen such parties at Duke that year. Only one of them became the source of national headlines, mostly because of a lying whore and a complicit media which simply couldn't resist the narrative of "rich, white, jocks" taking advantage of a poor, downtrodden black woman, who was "working her way through junior college." She was "working" all right. And it should also be noted for the record we're seeing a similar phenomenon in Florida.

And as awful as that incident was at UVA, is it really fair to lay it at the feet of LAX? God forbid, what if he'd been a hockey player? Apart from PR concerns, would that make that killing a "hockey" problem?

So perhaps LAX does have an immaturity problem. Maybe LAX players are trading championship jewelry for tattoos or cars, who knows? And maybe the bad boy perception is hurting the sport at a time when it's growing by leaps and bounds. Okay, do something about it. Just don't smear the sport with these two unique situtations. Because they are not representative.

Ladies and gentlemen, l'll be brief.

The issue here is not whether we broke a few rules or took a few liberties with our female party guests.

We did.

But you can't hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behaviour of a few sick, perverted individua.

If you do...shouldn't we blame
the whole fraternity system?

And if the whole fraternity system is guilty...then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general?

(Deltas cheering)

I put it to you, Greg.

Isn't this an indictment of our entire American society?

Well...you can do what you want to us, but we won't sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America!

Gentlemen!

If articulate = mind numbing repetitive posts about the evils of political correctness, he certainly is the champion.

LOL...Old Pio....You either love him or hate him....and, yes, he is articulate even though I agree with him maybe half the time; I mostly can not agree with his numbnut, antiquated political beliefs which he spouts in all the wrong places....no matter what, he provides an entertaining perspective into most matters. The ripping he took for defending sandusky on USCHO was classic

Interestingly, my "Please prove you're not a robot" words are: shriveled release....seems fitting for Old Pio
