The infamous University of Denver neighborhood bar and restaurant, "The Border" is for sale once again on Craigslist. The Border has been a popular if not star-crossed DU
hangout for at least 40 years.
The Border was closed in 2009 after their liquor license was suspended for 30 days. The suspension resulted from an undercover police operation after the bar was accused of selling liquor to an underage person.
The bar reopened in 2010 under new ownership, but failed to draw students in numbers due to intense competition in the neighborhood.
It has often been said, "The Border is not classy enough to be classified as a sleaze bar."
It was an incident at the Border in 2008 that led to the eventual hiring of DU lacrosse coach Bill Tierney after charges were filed against two DU lacrosse players during Jamie Munro's regime. A 23-year-old female, who happened to be a DU alum, was allegedly attacked by a group of lacrosse players while she and a friend were leaving the Border. After an investigation by the DU Athletic Department and a subsequent player revolt, Coach Munro was sacked and Tierney was brought in.
DU hockey goaltender Chris Burns was stabbed during a wild 75 person melee at the Border in 1994. It was business as usual the next night and another fight broke out. Burns finished his career with a 4.72 GAA and and .842 Save Percentage at DU.

Could Burns stop a beach ball?
That place sucked when it reopened. Nothing like the old days.
Always reminded me of a five star restaurant in Grand Forks.
You needed a vaccination to get in...but I have a lot of great memories
I went there about a week after it opened and told my group ,"they won't make one year". I'm not sure I hit the one year date but close.
Years ago I would go out of my way to get their Fahitas(sp?). They were the best.
What a weird place, with a weird history. Back in the day when the Border was the place to go, there was no Crimson & Gold, no Pioneer, no Jordan's, and no whatever-has-been-in-the-space that now has the Philly cheesesteak place. Wouldn't mind seeing something else giving it a try in that seedy corner. Most of my memories from the place are hazy and unsavory anyway.
Chris Burns transferred to the UNDies after recovering from his near-fatal stabbing...though I'm not sure if he ever played for them...
Chris Burns' incident was more like 1992 and not 1998. He played here under Serratore, who was gone after the '94 season.
D.G. should buy it and tend bar. He could call it The Boone. They would be lined up at the door.
Dg, can't afford to pay attention.
FOR GOD SAKES LET IT DIE!!!
I say University Gifts should expand. >:)
-my 2 cents-
Someone really should buy it but ditch the name and up the class factor...turn it into a high end dance lounge and have a fierce door policy. Get really good DJ's in there, expand the dance floor and produce a really great vibe. It's all about ownership and the atmosphere he/her/they strive for. Just create a vibe that wants to make hotties shake it on the floor.

You are lame.
Could be a good idea to make it more of a club. But I wonder whether that could attract some "undesirable" crowds to the DU neighborhood. It just seems like stuff goes wrong at the end of the night at clubs, more so than in your typical bars.
Whatever happens, DG needs to be the manager of this joint.

Why would that be lame? Just curious. You don't like music? Don't like girls? I think it would be a great idea. Where else around DU to hear music performance? There is a void as far as music around DU.

I like girls and music! That's why you can find me at the Lamont School of Music catching a performance every weekend!!
Why have a dance club when you've got the Lamont School? Seems like overkill to me.
The Lamont girls are foxy!
Isn't there already a bar by DU called The Boone?
