It's great to read the comments of the people who signed the petition. I don't know if's a real signature or not, but I see Paul Stastny's name on the list. Just about 50 more signatures to 1,000. I hope the admin reads every one of the comments on that petition.

just reached the goal. Now, I'd like to see the opposition put up a similar petition and see how many sigs they get. I know this isn't about a simple majority, which we obviously have, but I'm interested to see what the numbers behind the opposition actually are.

I would guess it's probably 70% pro Boone, 30% anti-Boone on campus, and about 90% pro Boone, 10% anti Boone off-Campus.

DU's top 2 leaders (Chancellor Robert Coombe and Provost Greg Kvistad) have their graduate degrees from Cal-Berkeley. Their vision for DU is trying to become far more liberal and diverse school than DU has historically been, and they will change anything that they thinks stands in the way of that goal.

Boone has very few friends on the Board of Trustees, either, as Dan Ritchie hated Boone.

dggoddard said...

Not everyone is Pro-Boone or Anti-Boone.

There is undoubtedly a number of "Don't know anything about it" and "Don't Care's"

DU's two emails to the alumni contained an unsubstantiated charge with no data to back it up...

"Boone an image that many women, persons of color, international students, staff and faculty members found difficult to relate to as defining the pioneering spirit."

And a totally misleading statement...

"Today, our students are coming forward to request the development of a new mascot character that represents the Denver Pioneer of today and the future."

Lying and misleading your alumni is no way to run a university.

Anonymous said...

They are fabricating their new mascot based on the above two false premises. When your "foundation" is a lie your entire case is built on sand and will not stand the test of time.

5BWest said...

Totally agree. Most of us care more about the truth and the principle than merely a mascot.

I think it can be argued that these lies resulted in the misuse of student government funds and the university general funds. Furthermore, this is a violation of USG's constitution which states "The USG maintains that one mark of a leading university is its commitment to diversity and the concomitant practice of recognizing and valuing the rich experiences and world-views of
individuals and groups." There can be a valid argument that Boone, a historical figure to the University, is being eliminated based on gender and race in violation of their own bylaws Amendment I Diversity Statement.

The University of Denver Board of Trustees met over the weekend for their Quarterly Meeting.

Not sure if mascot issue was discussed.

The Mascot Task Force will hold their second meeting on Wednesday night. Last week StratFix proposed seven mascots based on the research data they collected.

Anonymous said...

any chance of finding out what those seven nominations are?

dggoddard said...

The Mascot Task Force Leaders have put the following "Gag Order" on information.

"Please do not be spreading time-sensative information to non-committee members at this time. I assure you that the entire DU community will certainly be informed of our ideas/images/concerns/etc., we never intend to be deceitful or un-transparent, it is simply that these are all important issues whose timing can make or break this entire process for us as a campus. Thank you for understanding!
For those of you with PDF documentations, this applies to their content as well. Thank you.

What a bunch of hypocrites. They preach inclusiveness and then completely violate it. They are hell bent on making the selection without any alum involvement. They present this smoke screen PHONY set of meetings and then go about their selection. This secretive gag order confirms this.
They will fail. it will take over two years after their selection is unveiled before that becomes clear. They will never win over the alums because they ignored the alum desires .

dggoddard said...

I disagree.

The shit will hit the fan the second their artwork becomes circulated.

There are some well-connected. well-informed DU alumni on the committee, including marketing experts and former DU athletes.

They have apparently been advising the committee leadership to develop human, western pioneer options or risk mascot non-acceptance by the bulk of DU alumni and fans.

We will see if the committee leadership listens or ignores such advice...

As the mascot, they should pick that guy from the Seinfeld episode that dated Elaine. If you watch the show, that one episode where Elaine was dating a guy and thought he was black and spent the entire episode trying to figure out what ethnicity he was only to find out in the end that they were both just a couple of boring white people.

But, he was pefect, Elaine thought he was black, George thought he was hispanic (or something), Jerry thought he was middle eastern (or something). Everybody thought he was something else.

And I was admonished by some for questioning the obaba show costs. Tsk tsk

Anonymous said...

Is Seinfeld’s Michael Richard/Kramer really an example you want to use for diversity? 5:38:00 clearly doesn’t get it and never will.

hey Obama crack pot--you have become a major annoyance on this site. Take your polluted Obama support elsewhere.

I recommended a Jackalope with a red vest and a sheriffs badge. Not sure that they figured out the joke-- maybe I should have added horn rim glasses and a bow tie.

Mike Corbett (DU Alum) named UAA head coach.

dggoddard said...

Great choice by UAA.

Best of luck to the Seawolves.

Anonymous said...

Well, if you've been hoping for a jackalope or a killer elk, you're in luck. By far the focus group favorite to hate is the robot. You read that right. Robot.

GO_PIOS said...

My bad... Corbett is one of the four finalists.

BOONE!

As if things aren't bad enough, there is no relief in sight with the end of USG President Sam Estenson's reign of terror. He has completed his undergraduate degree in Intercultural Communication and moving on to engage in social engineering somewhere else. In his place, unopposed, is Mike Schutte, an Environmental Studies & Sociology major who is looking forward to 'moving forward' with a new mascot, according to the Clarion.

I am not opposed to liberal arts degrees but I think the University is in desperate need of people who can count and apply practical thought. The USG President's role is so highly regarded, that only Schutte could muster the courage for the role? Too bad.

the robot is a pretty traditional marketing trick ... when asking someone to pick from three things they normally wouldn't want, make sure one of them is absolutely repugnant (expensive, ugly, etc) and the target is tricked into thinking the other two aren't so bad.

Anonymous said...

liberal arts degrees can either be useful or mush. depends on the student and the courses.

Anonymous said...

Wow, Tim...liberal arts majors can't count and apply practical thought, huh? Do me a favor, if you're making pro-Boone statements, think before you write.

Anonymous said...

I am very disappointed that more pro-Boone people are not running for USG office.

The only ones I now are Adam Hammerman, Shelby and Erik Meek...

USA will be controlled by multicultural forces for at least another year.

Just received college fair materials to hand out next week. I'm happy to report that on the "DU At A Glance" page of the principle pamphlet, "An Introduction to DU," is a photo of a group of DU women holding a very recognizable Boone cartoon.

I have a liberal arts undergraduate degree and an MBA. My wife has a liberal arts degree. My comments were intended to be a humorous. But, now that you mention it, DU has had a problem both counting and providing clear thoughts this past year on a number of issues. You might expect some 'diversity' of ideas and experience from the candidates running for USG. Instead, the USG appears to have a carbon copy pres.

My guess is the USG has alienated so many students that no one wants to run.

Anonymous said...

The other thing about the USG, Tim, is that the heavy-handed way the administration and Board of Trustees force themselves into issues that the USG should be involved with undoubtedly turns off many students who would otherwise be inclined to run.

Plus, all of that late teens/early 20s apathy....

Anonymous said...

The USG recently announced that a significant reason to replace Boone was the protracted contract dispute to have the University reimburse costs related to tickets and travel expenses. Boone will always be in our hearts but it’s time to move on and support our new mascot, whoever or whatever that may be.

Anonymous said...

@ 5:24....

I see what you did there...and, have to admit, it's mildly amusing.

Anonymous said...

Central scouting final results in.....One DU recruit in top 100....way to go DU!!!!

Anon 9;26 That's good!
We don't need any more two year wonders. Let's return to our 04 model; four year players. Let the two year guys go elsewhere. All four year players builds better team unity and morale.

You know, this mascot/logo business can get serious. A student at UCONN says the university's new, meaner, huskie logo "promotes rape." Don't ask me, I got no clue. Just remember, if you empower wackadoos with PC driven mascots/logos, you're asking for trouble. These folks are endlessly creative.

Anonymous said...

It's not rape if it's your dog. Get it?

Anonymous said...

I heard that Boone lost out due to a split in the vote. Seems that half the Boone supporters voted for an image of a chubby fella in a toga. With the split, the robot supporters got a spot rather than Boone.

Anonymous said...

When does a dog give consent? Seriously. I need to know.

Anonymous said...

What type of dog is DU considering? A doberman, a border collie, a poodle?

Anonymous said...

Old Pio might reconsider the dog if it was more aryan. Maybe a german shepherd with blue or green eyes.
