Gopher Hockey Player Cited For DUI On Moped

(above) Blue Chip Freshman recruit Gabe Guertler was busted for driving his moped under the influence
Gophers men’s hockey coach Don Lucia suspended incoming freshman Gabe Guertler on Sunday for violating team rules.

The indefinite suspension comes before official team workouts have begun but will last at least until November. Guertler’s status will be re-evaluated then

Hennepin County public records show that Guertler was arrested early Saturday morning by the University of Minnesota Police Department and charged with drunken driving.

He was released later that morning. He is scheduled to make a court appearance on Oct. 11. He faces up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. A university representative confirmed that Guertler was driving a moped when he was pulled over.

Hearing Gabe Geurtier is going to get confusing to PIO fans. It'll remind me of the famed Gabe Gauthier.

Just 1 DUI? Monty has a 3 strike rule for suspensions.

Owning, driving, standing next to or knowing someone who owns a moped is punishment enough.

To be honest... I worry about this kind of stuff happening at DU with Montgomery in charge.

If you are a hockey player driving a moped, you need to check and make sure your balls are still attached.

@ achs:

Really? You're worried about that?

Can I ask why?

Does Montgomery have a reputation as a permissive coach that didn't enforce the rules in Juniors?

Or, are you just worried that he might not emphasize 'character' during the recruiting process as much as Gwoz did?

I'm honestly asking, here - I have no basis for thinking one way or another.

That said, I am willing to separate Montgomery's past alcohol-related arrests from his behavior as a coach, so I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt...unless there is a good reason not to.

Gopher Zach Budish shredded his ACL reportedly for playing moped street hockey. Now Guertler wants to be the leader of the Mild Bunch as opposed to the Harley riding Wild Bunch.

Moped mania is not limited to Gophs as packs of moped riding football players have been seen at Michigan State and Georgia.
