New Chant: "CC ISN'T VERY NICE"?

Look for cheers to change. CC SUCKS and a host of other student chants are headed for the trash bin. The The DU Clarion has an article about our energetic student section. According to a number of current DU students in the student section, there has been a watchful eye cast on them this entire season. There are DU staff assigned to watch the section, intervene and lecture students when chants "cross the line". Students have been advised that "alums are complaining" about the chants. Granted, there is a fine line between bad taste and clever chants but LetsGoDU stands 100% behind our students. In an era where the fun is squeezed out of everything, we have a great student section that pushes the boundaries and makes it tough for visiting teams. The alums we talk to are proud of our student section - especially this year.

Call off the nanny state and let the students be students.

And by the way, "CC Sucks".

Eventually, we won't be able to cheer for our teams because it will hurt our opponent's feelings. PC run amuck!

The bigger point here is that DU has a hard time filling the seats at most of its sporting events, and squelching the student voices hurts school spirit, hurts attendance and reduces game day atmosphere, which in turn, hurts our athletic performance, hurts recruiting, hurts revenue, hurts engagement and hurts overall the DU experience.

Most of these 'chants' have been around for 10 years or more, and comprise perhaps 3% of what one would hear at DU sporting event. And today, there aren't even real obscenities in the chants. We're worried about "You suck and your mom is a whore"? Really?

Kids today are far tamer than they were 35 years ago, when full size chickens where thrown on the ice, 15 foot long CC Sucks banners were unfurled from the rafters, and full-sized coffins were smuggled into games and carried into opposing fan sections.

PITA would have shut down Magness if it was the old days - frogs, rats, chickens, etc. let the guys have fun!

alums are complaining...ok they just lied and made that one up. Let students chant whatever they want. They are the only noise in the whole building, and they want them to be quiet? Wow, that is ridiculous.

I don't think they want quiet - I just think they want to eliminate profanities. Chopp is challenging students to be more creative in their cheering, but most creativity falls flat in practice, since repetition and simplicity are what makes cheers resonate. That's why "Let's Go Denver" "CC Sucks" and "Fifty-Seven" are so effective.

Easy, Simple. Loud.

Last year I was stopped by DU rent-a-cops because I was wearing a sweatshirt that proclaimed the obvious "CC Sucks". After a ten minute conference with their superiors, it was finally determined that I could wear it.

Seriously, DU tuition, fees, room/board off or on campus are more than $50,000 a year per student and the chancellor is concerned about fan chants at hockey games? Focus on making DU more affordable and maybe lowering costs or I'm sure a lot of parents and families will be cursing.

Yet, others can go sit in their hoity toytee Crimson seats, buy unlimited Import beers, cocktails and wine all night; get stone ass drunk - then jump in your Audi or Range Rover and drive back to Highlands Ranch. As long as you buy a DU jersey at the game, a Turkey sandwich, program and souvineers for the kids and your milf? But give students free tickets and then tell them how they must act. Sure, that makes complete sense.

Political correctness reigns here at DU. The chants might push the acceptable, but they're not any worse than I hear at the Broncos games (many times from kids way younger than the average student here at DU). Let the students be students, bring back Boone as the mascot, and stop trying to dictate what we can chant, Tsar Chopp!! Oh, and I was a staunch supporter of yours until this BS!!

I don't think Chopp is the one pushing this. I'm hearing that this latest embarrasment appears to be pushed by Greg Kivistad, the Provost/chief academic officer, a Berkley grad who is anti-Boone and anti-fun.
