Mannino Wins First NHL Start For Islanders

The New York Islanders scored a season-high three power-play goals and DU Alum Peter Mannino made 40 saves in his first NHL start as the Islanders defeated the Chicago Blackhawks, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at United Center.

"I couldn’t ask for anything better. That’s the dream come true: to get a start in the NHL and to get a win on the first one with a lot of shots like that," said Mannino. "It’s picture perfect."

Mark Streit scored a season-high two power-play goals and added an assist en route to the Islanders’ second win on their six-game road trip. Richard Park and Frans Nielsen also tallied for the Islanders, who are 4-1-1 in their last six games.

Mannino looked solid early in his first NHL start. He made 12 saves in the opening period, including a dandy on Andrew Ladd late in the frame.

"I told myself earlier I just wanted to be composed," said Mannino. "I kind of kept that in my mind right from the beginning, and it went well."

The Blackhawks had several chances at the start of the second period. Martin Havlat had a mini-breakaway, but Mannino denied him. Dave Bolland then had a look at an open net, but shot the puck off the far post. Ben Eager also had an opportunity on a breakaway, but Mannino again was up to the task.

"He made some big saves. Obviously, in the second period, we needed it. They sprung some guys on some breakaways and they had a couple of point-blank shots that we had a hard time getting out of our zone," said Islanders Head Coach Scott Gordon. "The second period, I thought, was the difference-maker."

Not only did Peter beat the Black Hawks yesterday but Dubie led the Blue Jackets to a win over Chicago on Friday night. So two ex-DU goalies had back-to-back wins over Chicago. Sweet!
