UVM 6 DU 4 Saturday Final

On a night when the University of Denver honored its past hockey heros, DU lost to the University of Vemont 6-4. DU was plagued by defensive mistakes that led to several Vermont odd-man rushes.

Freshman Adam Murray started in goal but struggled through an inconsistent evening. At times he made fantastic saves but a decisive six goal against DU was too much to overcome.

One of the few heros for DU was Tyler Ruegsegger scoring two goals.

DU Goals
Tyler Ruegsegger (2)
Jesse Martin
Shawn Ostrow

Three Stars
First Star: Brayden Irwin (Vermont)
Second Star: Jack Downing (Vermont)
Third Star: Jesse Martin (Denver)

Gotta give UVM credit, they fought back after a tough loss Friday.

DU's D was awful and yes Murray gave up two that shouldn't have been goals especially the second in the first--routine glove save. The other on was the gaping five hole in the second.

UVM has a great D group who are big and tough (7 back from last year). Shots were something like 32-30 which was way more balanced then Friday. UVM really stopped our offensive attack tonight. Tough schedule early on is a positive. DU has tons of talent but showed a blatant lack of discipline all weekend. Hopefully it's a wake up call. CC falls to NU in the Springs so we've got that to be happy about.

Two days of baseball upcoming. Go Roxs! Plus I hear that other team that plays with the pigskin is playing a big game too. Hell of a couple of days for the sports fans in the MHC!

DU gives up 10 goals this weekend....ouch.

Here's a tissue, Tito... Remember one thing DU, defense wins championships. You cannot win by outscoring your opponents.

Anon-

Well, yes, you do win by outscoring your opponents. Be it 1-0, 4-2, 8-7, etc.

Your point is valid in that run-and-gun hockey won't win you championships....however, scoring more goals than your opponent is rather helpful on a game-to-game basis. Though, winning consistently 4-2 is probably best.

Great Offensive showing this week by DU. 4 goals at least in both games... you'd expect to win a game when you put up numbers like that but the defense was horrible. The transition game got them time and time again and they allowed way too many quality shots in the zone. Also the turn over count in our zone was way too high, especially when you pass the puck to nobody in the slot for a easy interception. Then on the physical play they were getting the hell beat out of em. Yes DU played on par in this area at times but for the most part I think UMV was dishing out the beating a lot more. Both goalies were very week this weekend. Chevy defiantly didn't look like himself Friday. Murray... Yes let's remember this is his first college start, but he has a lot to work on. He's got to work on that glove hand and his positioning.

I also won't forget to mention Anderson was being Anderson this week. The penalty shot was terrible, the charging on Murray before the shot... no call, charging on Rugs... nothing, and the Vermont players moving their own net just before we scored on them which defiantly looked intentional... squat. Another screw job from the tool.

Now with all that said I do have to give Vermont some props. They showed us why they made the Frozen Four last season, their goalie came up big when he had to and they have quite a few snipers in their line up. They waited for us to make the mistakes which we did and they capitalized on them. They are going to have a very good season ahead of them.

Yes we got the split, but it easily could of been 0-2 if not for the stupid penalties Vermont took Friday and some late period heroics. Offensively I have no worries but the D and goaltending has to really step it up.

Looks like we have Ohio State next and I think we are playing in Nationwide Arena. I'm a bit worried about this series just because it seems like games like this always have something special in store for the home team. Yes DU has a very impressive record on NHL ice, but I just have a feeling. I'm hoping for at least a split.

T.A. was in mid-season form this weekend.

A) I have no idea why a penalty shot was awarded, instead of a 2 minute hook.

B) Should have been 5 minutes for charging the goalie.

C) The rules clearly state that if a defender knocks the net off right before a puck would have gone in that a goal shall be awarded.

A gerbil would have done a better job than Todd Anderson....

I hate Anderson.

Good series UVM :)`

Q: What do Anderson and aforementioned gerbil have in common?

A: They both have their head up someone else's ass.

Go Rockies!

UVM was a really stout opponent and deserved a split. As much as Anderson was painful, that wasn't nearly as bad as the idiot UVM fans that we had in our section.

I understand that everyone has the right to cheer on their team especially when they are dominating on the road. But this group took it beyond the point of good taste. When Ruegsegger got run, they were high fiving and clapping while he was still on the ice. Everyone in our area took it as long as we could but at the end of the period everyone in the area including a couple of UVM fans finally had enough. Unfortunately this just encouraged these idiots.

I know I am throwing a collective blanket over all UVM fans and I know these guys were aberration not the norm for UVM fans, but this group was over top. I am all for spirited support for you team especially on the road. But there is a line that shouldn't be crossed and cheering for an injured player is that for me.

I wish I could just be commenting on two quality hockey teams that played a great series, but I had to get this off my chest. I am just happy my kids weren't there to see this poor sportsmanship. Unfortunately some families weren't so lucky.
