1. Rhett Rakhshani
Denver | Senior | Forward
To Date:
22 GP, 15-14--29, 5 PPG, 3 GWG, plus-9

The Skinny: Rakhshani has been a model of consistency for the nation's top-ranked team. He's scored at least one point in 17 of the Pioneers' 22 games -- in fact, he's got as many multiple-goal games as scoreless games -- and hasn't been held scoreless in back-to-back games. He's already matched his single-season high for goals without sacrificing his playmaking touch; he's assisted on 14 goals this season, earning the first assist on 10 of them.

This would be a weekend for Rhett to lead the team to success over the Badgers. The team's success means that DU's big guns are playing well and leading their team to victory. The individual honors will follow the team's success. If Rhett were to eventually win this award it means that he led his team to a very successful season. I am hoping that he and Chevy would be serious contenders for the Hobey as it means DU had a damn good year.

Rhett is having a great year, and it's nice to see him generating some Hobey Baker interest. Clearly being the most consistent producer on the top ranked team gets you consideration from the media.

That said, while he is a very consistent priducer with flashes of skillful brilliance from time to time, calling him the Hobey Baker favorite seems like a stretch to me. Top 10? Absolutely. Top 5? In the conversation. Top 1? Not sure about that. I'd love to see him come up big for DU down the stretch, as he's the leader of the team.

Chevy is also a good candidate, but he's been human lately rather than super human as he was at the beginning of the season. Would love to see him step up and win some games on his own with some dominating performances down the stretch.

For me, Chevy is the reason DU is at the top this year. Offensively and defensively, DU is just a little above average - it's good goaltending that has made them a top team. They need to show some offensive and defensive improvement if they expect hardware beyond the Virg Foss Trophy for Mid-Season Excellence.

I will have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. Remember, the Hobey Baker award is awarded to the player who best exemplifies the sport of NCAA ice hockey not necessarily the "best player" which is a specious argument to begin with. RhettRock is a class act and a great player. He is more than deserving of the Hobey - it is just a question of whether they can award it (again) to a DU player/WCHA player without the East Coast programs howling about it.
