Denver Post: Martin Faces Lengthy Rehab & Recovery

Mike Chambers of the Denver Post has a complete update on injured University of Denver hockey player Jesse Martin. Martin came out of surgery yesterday and Chambers spoke with his father Terry via telephone today.

DenverPioneers.com
has lots of interesting quotes from the Press Conference held by Jesse's doctors from Regions Medical Center in St, Paul, MN.

The Edmonton Journal covered the Press Conference as well.

ESPN.com reported on the story via the Associated Press.

ABC Channel 5 in Minneapolis has a 5 minute Press Conference video. Jesse's father talks about the surgery and answers questions. Its very good.
Press Conference Highlights

“Jesse is doing great. He actually walked today for the first time since the accident.”
- Dr. Alex Mendez

“We want Jesse confident with his ability to walk. We want to make sure he is swallowing OK."
- Dr. Robert Morgan

“Seeing Jesse walk was amazing; it was amazing. The only thing that can compare was seeing him born.”
- Terry Martin

Great to hear that Jesse will be back in Denver soon. Its been an unbelievable ten days following this situation unfold.

Interesting to read in Chambers article that Jesse should regain full range of motion in his neck.

I had heard last week that he might lose 30% range of motion, so already that's a bonus.

Would be interesting to know the strategies the different medical teams were proposing in surgery. Guess it proves once again to get second and third opinions whenever possible.

CTV is reporting that Jesse walked four steps today to a chair in his hospital room. Thumbs up.

I've been holding back on my optimism but tonight I'm going for it with a choice single malt; might even do two.

Let's all lift a pint (or two, even three) to Jesse and his family!

His journey has just begun and we will be there every step of the way to support our brother Pioneer.

Magness arena will shake the night that Jesse walks out on the red carpet. I can't wait to see that!

msbdu, lets hope he's able to do that on Senior night with his parents by his side. That would be an awesome sight.

I love all the coverage that Jesse is getting from all over the nation and Canada... it really shows the severity of the hit in comparison to the other nasty hits we've seen in the past.

It's just too bad though that the WCHA doesn't seem to care about trying to put end to this recklessness.

Thanks for posting the Press Conference Link. I posted the link, but was unable to embed the video on the Blog. Check out the video its very interesting.

As far as the "WCHA not caring" comment, just be patient. As soon as Jesse gets back to Denver and the family gets back to Edmonton, people will begin examining the role of open ice hits in college hockey.

These injuries are unacceptable and new rules must be implemented to protect the players.

I agree wholeheartedly with what you say but I am skeptical that the WCHA will do much if anything given that they had a golden opportunity to send a message with the Malone suspension but chose not to do so.

Perhaps the fact that Martin's spinal cord was also badly bruised in addition to the broken neck will push the WCHA powers that be to grow some cajones and eliminate these types of hits by imposing a very lengthy suspension. Otherwise it is just a matter of time before a player is paralyzed for life.
