News & Notes From Around PioNation

Matt Carle is the lone DU Alum alive in the NHL playoffs now that Philadelphia has advanced to the 2nd Round.  Carle led all NHL defensemen in even-strength points during the regular season.  He's quietly establishing himself as one of the better defensemen in the league.

Two DU recruits are still alive in the USHL Semi-Finals that kick off on Friday night.  Josiah Didier plays for Cedar Rapids and Daniel Doremus plays for Sioux Falls.  There is a possibility that they could face each other in the finals as their teams are on opposite sides of the bracket.
----------
Mesa State College trustees voted to change their name to Colorado Mesa University if the Colorado state legislature gives its approval. The college has budgeted $400,000 to make the name change on everything from letterheads to signs.  Metro State last week suspended its plans to rename itself Denver State University after DU objected.

DG, I'm not 100% sure this hasn't been mentioned on the site yet, but Penn State just signed Gadowsky from Princeton as their new hockey coach. It's good to have an end to the rumors about them grabbing Gwoz.

I must say, though, that at first glance, Gadowsky looked a little too much like Gwozdecky.

ZZZZZZZZZZZ.....Gwoz wasn't going anywhere, we are not reverting to '80s-level Pio hockey and the sky isn't falling. Let's see here: Gwoz was going to Bucky, Gwoz was headed to Sparty (twice), Gwoz was going to lead the Ohio St Buckeyes and just recently Penn St...he went to none of them. He still coaches the Denver Pioneers. I have never felt that he was going to leave for another NCAA job. Not saying he wouldn't leave for another job, just not another NCAA job...

Gwozdecky hadn't been mentioned in Penn State rumors for a long time, so I guess it was kind of a non-story.

Kind of ironic that two of the coaching vacancies filled this week were by coaches with Colorado College ties.

Gadowsky played at CC and Norm Bazin coached at CC for 8 years and they'll now head up Penn State & UMASS-Lowell respectively.

Another note...

With an average per-game increase of 1,409 fans from 2009-2010 levels, DU was 10th nationally in average attendance increase in NCAA D-1 men's basketball.

http://blogs.denverpost.com/sports/2011/04/26/17030/17030/

With a move to a more regionally identifiable conference, one hopes this trend will continue.

That said, I am hearing rumblings that the faculty and administration are rapidly tiring of Joe Scott and his attitude, abrasiveness, and inflated ego.

Those things are all far more tolerable if you're winning basketball games. However, in the eyes of many at DU, Joe has yet to do that in sufficient quantity to make up for the fact that dealing with him is, apparently, like dragging a piece of blackboard across a wall of severed fingers.

(Thanks to Neil Gaiman for the simile...)

High percentage changes are easy when dealing with small numbers

Who cares what faculty thinks of the basketball coach?

@ Aluuum: It wasn't a percentage-based comparison. It was sheer numbers based. DU drew an average of 1,409 fans per game more this year than last year - which, considering last year's attendance and the general apathy of the student population to intercollegiate sports, is pretty damn good.

By way of comparison, CSU had the 4th biggest increase with 1,487 more fans. BYU had the biggest, with a 4,685 per game attendance spike.

DU just got angry with DSU, now they are suggesting two CMU's. Such stupidity.
