Wasn't there a death in Murray's family? That would explain why he isn't on the trip.

Murray didn't dress last weekend for either game, so you can assume that he was out of town.

Not sure who the funeral was for, but I believe it wasn't a family member, but don't quote me on that.

Olkinoura is better than Murray.

Anonymous said...

Not at all shocking. Murray is the clear #3 goalie at this point. I think it is even money that he transfers to one of the Alaska schools, sits a year and finishes up his collegiate career in his home state. If he decides to stay at DU next year this will be a common occurrence.

Way to kick a kid when he's down Anon 1:03. Not only did did your grandma die, you suck and should change schools. Hope you had fun at the funeral though.

Why do you guys always have to stir the pot? Just let it go and let the players live their lives and play the game they love. Someone always has to throw out comments to get people commenting and speculating on what is going to happen. Its like watching a TV show or movie and trying to guess whats going to happen next and asking peoples opinions. Just shut up and watch the show and your stupid questions will be answered. Let it go and let these young men enjoy the rest of the season without trying to stir something up. They have enough on their plate with league play and playoffs and qualifying for the NCAA tourney.

Message boards and blogs are part of the landscape in D-I sports, and fan speculation and criticism is part of the game even if opinions these are only read by a small number of people.

Remember, it's fand who fund the enterprise, and they are entitled to express their opinions about player quality. If a player (or his family) can't take a little fan criticism or speculation from time to time, the player shouldn't be playing a D-I revenue sport - He should play club or intramurals.

Remember these are college athletes not professionals. Would you be willing tell a player or parent the same thing you’ve posted?

I’m pretty sure you can be a fan without posting douchebag comments like Anon 1:03:00

Uh oh...straying dangerously close to the discussion that led to Swami's exile....

There's a really big difference between being a fan and being a douche bag a-hole.

A really, REALLY BIG difference...

I didn't say anything negative about Murray as a person or anything about his personal tragedy. I made a simple comment that based on this season and recent play he is clearly the #3 goalie. No more no less. My comment was more about the choice of using the word "shocking" and that not traveling with the team for road games might become common place for him based on his and the other goalies play.

Yes, I speculated that he might transfer but that speculation isn't harsh or outside the realm of possibility. He wouldn't be the first or the last college player to come to a program and find out that there are better players at his position and decide to make a change. I'm not trying to chase the kid out of town.

What is out of line is calling me a douchebag when all I was doing was making a comment about the program. I thought that was what the purpose of a message board like this. My speculation was based on the fact that every player wants to play and but he might not get that opportunity here. If you think that is harsh, you have got a pretty thin skin.

Wow. Anon 103 you keep digging your self deeper and deeper. Just admit your an insensitive jerk off and move on. I doubt you even go to the games or have the faintest clue about hockey. Seriously. Get a life. These kids aren't professionals.

Anonymous said...

Nice timing douchebag. Wouldn’t want to let the kid grieve or anything like that.

Condolences to the Murray family.

Anonymous said...

How does this have anything to do with the death in his family?!?!?! My comment had ZERO to do with that. You are the morons making that connection. Do you think the coaching staff hesitated for a moment in making their decision because of his personal situation. They made this decision based on what goes on the ice. No different than the simple comment I made about the depth chart of DU's goalies.

You are all acting like a bunch of hockey moms. You act like we are talking about squirts. I am surprised you can type a response because you are busy cutting up orange slices.

I am a DU alum who loves this program. And yes, I go to the games. But I am embarrassed right now to be lumped in with a fan base that can't differentiate between commenting on the state of the program (which because the program is made up of student athletes comments about the program positive or negative will be comments about student athletes) and a personal attack.

Ring_of_Fire said...

@ Proven...

Agreed. But, I trust that you are not insinuating that ALL criticism of student-athletes crosses that line into douche-baggery.

The simple reality of the situation is that fans relaying opinions on the relative effectiveness of one player vis-a-vis another is, has been, and always will be part of the landscape of Division I sports. You're just seeing it a lot more than you used to because the internet has given like-minded fans places to congregate and share opinions.

Of course, one of the issues that tends to crop up from time to time in these places is the differing opinions regarding what it means to be a "fan". Personally, what I don't like are the blanket statements like "so-and-so sucks". I find them to be not only unnecessary, but often far more revealing of the poster's ignorance than of the player in question's actual abilities. I also hate disrespectful personal attacks on athletes for things they have no control over.

However, I find that criticism about specific games/plays/instances is completely legitimate. For instance, I feel perfectly justified in saying that John Ryder had a lousy game last Friday night. Two tripping penalties and a bad giveaway that led directly to a Minnesota goal is not the kind of game a Senior should be proud of. And, believe me, John knows it.

But this is just me and my fan-dom.

Others seem to believe that THEIR fan-dom entitles them to be boorish fools in their postings...and that, as unpleasant as it may be to read, is their right. Just as it is MY right to call someone out when I believe they're being disrespectful. To whit: See my comments during the Kiki Boone salivation fest...er "discussion"...this past summer.

At the end of the day, we just can't tell other people "how to be a fan". All we can do is cheer for and support our teams in the way that works best for us. If that doesn't seem to "mesh" with someone else's fan-dom, then I'd say that, as long as we're not talking about malicious, hateful, sexist, racial, or otherwise despicable commentary, simply agreeing to disagree is often the best policy.

Just my $0.02. Others will have their own thoughts...

These players ARE basically professionals, folks. Most get paid up to $200,000 in scholarship and room and board money over 4 years, plus top coaching, TV exposure, ice time, promotion, travel, equipment, etc. to say nothing of the 5,00-6,000 people cheeringg them on. The total package they get is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

These are D-I athletes playing in a revenue sport. They are public figures, and 80% of them will end up with some level of actual pro hockey after this, too.

These aren't squirts. They are are elite pros in all but name.

Time to stop coddling.

The only douche bag here is the dude (or chick) who calls someone out for saying that someone is our #3 goalie. Get a life! The internet is apparently too harsh of a world for you. We're all fans of Brittain, Jussi and Adam. We're also entitled to express our opinions as to who is the best of them. Can't handle it? Go play with your dolls.

Anonymous said...

You're a douchebag. No, you're a doucebag for calling me a doucebag. Lol. Best posts you've had on the Blog for a long time DG. Beavis & Butthead return.

Thank you 5:10!!!! Finally someone that understands what I was saying. It is called a depth chart. It isn't calling anyone out. That is the structure of a hockey team. There is a first, second, third and forth line. Listen to any hockey broadcast and they describe the goalie that gets the lion share of games as a #1 goalie. Right now the DU goalie depth chart is Brittain, Jussi, Murray and Hope.

My speculation about Murray transferring was based on my assumption that any D1 goalie wants to play and with Brittain and Jusi currently above him on the depth chart that isn't going to happen anytime soon. All I was saying was the possibly the best way for him to play is to make a move to another school.

As a DU fan all I want to see is DU win. If it is Adam Murray in net for us great. Knowing the competitiveness and character of the players that DU recruits, I am fairly certain that all of the DU goalies practice as hard as they can to prove to the coaches that they should get the start. And if they aren't the one that gets the start I know they are firmly behind the guy that got the start. Just as I as a DU fan am 100% behind the whatever kid is between the pipes for the Pioneers.

and please don't forget that the idiot who posts here and criticizes fans for critiquing players is either this one dumbass who also posts on USCHO, or someone who masquerades as him. In either case, just a troll, so disregard.

@ 5:05

Let's say someone gets grants/scholarships to go to school for (say) wanting to become a lawyer. Is this person all of a sudden a professional lawyer because they were able to secure funding for their schooling? I think not. Or if someone secures funding to become a doctor...Is this person all of a sudden to be considered a professional pediatrician (as an example)? I think not. Or do we expect said doctor-in-training to be able to perform brain surgery while still in school, just because they got their schooling paid for? The list goes on and on.

If someone wants to watch professionals, there is a team called the Avalanche that I suggest you become a fan of because you have no comprehension nor an appreciation of the term "amateur".

You are quickly proving yourself to be an idiot. Robots everywhere are happy your proven not to be one of them.

I guess you smack talking idiots forgot that Coach George Gwozdecky called you guys out in the Denver Post last year, for being idiots.

Anonymous said...

Who you callin' smack talkin' idiots? Damn, Weezie--I gonna slap you upside da head, and then call YOU out in the Denver Post! In the Lifestyles section! What???!!! DG's lovin' this traffic, so let's keep up our smack talkin' tendencies, yo!!!

Anonymous said...

Your gradmama died. So what. We've got to play a game. Isn't that more important? Discuss.

Anonymous said...

Fans are like our political society. There are a lot of people in the middle like Ring of Fire. Believes you can occassionally critique certain plays and/or players while still being respectful and still being a great fan.

Then there are people to the far right that believe the only true way to be a great fan is to support 100% and say everything is perfect and everyone is wonderful all of time.

Then there's the far left, we'll just call them libtards. They feel that they are entitled by being a fan to contstanly bitch and moan about everything. And be as disrespectful in their approach as they damn please.

The bitching matches will continue to the end times because the far right and the libtards will never see eye to eye on this issue.

Anonymous said...

I heard Hope is the best goalie and the only reason they don't play him is because it would be unfair to the rest of the league.

Anonymous said...

Old Pio may be a troll but he's our troll. Leave him be.

Anonymous said...

I really don't get what politics has to do with anything here. Someone just sounds like an angry, racist teatard who drinks way too much of the fox koolaid.

Anonymous said...

Teatard. That's some good stuff. Never heard that one before. FYI - the political part was a metaphor and a joke based on the USCHO threads right now. Remove all of the political references from my post above and the point still stands. These arguments will never stop because people have different philosophies on what a "true" fan is.

Anonymous said...

DG is a "true" fan. He wore a toga to the Frozen 4 for crying out loud.

Anonymous said...

Don't let these thin-skinned idiots on this site get to you, anon 1:03. I agree with your opinions and your speculation is certainly in the realm of possibility. There are just a lot of pussies on this board that can't handle the truth.

It’s been a decade and a dozen pants sizes since DG wore the toga. He’s twice the man and has done twice as much for DU since then.

Hello from Madison, just got wind of this. Chill people! According to Coach Gwoz, Adam Murray flew back to Anchorage to attend the funeral of a close friend's father, thus he missed the Minnesota series. He didn't travel with the Pios to Madison because the team obviously thinks it is better served with Brittain and Olkinuora. No slam on Murray. I don't normally read comments and certainly didn't think a simple informational tweet would cause such commotion. This post is to clarify, nothing else. -- MC
