Paul Phillips To Captain Pioneers

Head coach George Gwozdecky announced at the University of Denver Hockey Banquet last night that junior defenseman Paul Phillips would be team captain for the 2012-13 Pioneers. Nick Shore, Chris Knowlton and Shawn Ostrow will serve as the alternate captains.

Phillips has 1 goal and 16 assists in 109 career games for the Pioneers.

Phillips was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the seventh round (195th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Seems like a solid choice to captain a team that is going to be far more blue-collar than recent DU teams.

Phillips wore the "A" this year. He's always come across as a hard worker.

Phillips is a hard worker, a good player and seems like a good leader. I've had a couple interactions with him and he seems like a real good kid.

Solid choice for captain. Level-headed, well respected and plays hard every game. He has emerged as a very steady presence, and will be counted on next year in what figures to be a solid defensive team, but underpowered offensively.

The only natural fit, really. He really turned it around from turnover machine to solid D-man in the last 3 years, which obviously came from hard work and self-evaluation.

Maybe having a blue collar team will be a nice change compared to what we're used to. I hope hard work and skating like they care won't be a problem next year.

Good to hear. This is so much better that the "co-captain" approach. One person gets the C, and one person only. I expect Pauly will lead these guy through rough waters

Congrats, Paul and the rest of the alternates!

And special congrats to Knowlton as well. IIRC, he has been in Gwoz's "doghouse" on more than one occassion. To not only get out of the doghouse, but be named an alternate captain speaks volumes about how far he has come as a student athelete.

Agree with 2:14, this team has defense and blue collar written all over it to enter the season. We'll have to wait and see, but it might be a nice change from prior years.

And, if our forwards step up and we find out a way to consistently score as a team, this might be a recipe for success.

Any speculation on Dan Olzewski's ice hockey career at DU? Was he at the awards night?
