I'd agree that over the long haul DU can't keep pumping $20+ million a year of tuition dollars into the athletic department. They need new revenue streams.
The question is, "Could DU make money or break even in football?"
Tough question.
The stadium is the easy part.
DU could play at Mile High. U. of Miami plays their home games at Pro Player Stadium, so it could be done.
9:03, I see that presidential politics are getting to you. Just because you yell that something is a fact! doesn't make it so. Support your statements with balanced evidence or they are merely opinions. Opinions that most reasonable people would disagree with.
I believe football would be a terrible idea. DU can barely get 6,000 out for a hockey game. A hockey program with over 60 years of history in our community with amazing success. Broncos rule in Denver. CU and CSU have long histories with some high levels of success and don't draw well at the gate. I'd be surprised if DU could draw 20k to a game. The successful football programs in the country draw 75k+ and have huge TV contracts. It's nearly insane to consider it an option.
"Results speak volumes": the disastrous results that would happen if DU tried to add football would speak volumes about what a horrible idea adding football is. Having to keep a few sports in a crappy conference for a few years until a better option opens up is chump change, compared to the waste of money and energy that would happen if DU tried to add football. The idea is laughable. Football is a comparative failure at CU and CSU. DU is a much smaller school--we should stick to what we're good at. Plus, we have a lot invested in trying to figure that whole basketball success thing.
Sooooo....your idea is to purchase an entire high school that DPS would is probably not interested in selling? That just makes so much sense. About as much sense as you calling an interstate highway a "street"...LOL.....
If the WAC falls apart, the only option is not adding a tremendously expensive football program that would play in 1/4 full Mile High Stadium.
A non-football survival is definitely realistic - as two other non football conferences already exist on the west coast.
Not entirely sure why everyone is assuming that Denver and Seattle are going to have trouble following BSU unless the Broncos go Mountain West (and even then, MWC has an odd number of olympic sports as is... so I'm not sure why it isn't being thrown out there more).
Geographically speaking, the Big West + WAC Non-Football Remnants (Denver, Seattle, BSU) makes a lot of sense - and would give Denver a BETTER option than the WCC, which has clearly snubbed their noses at us (and probably Seattle) numerous times.
That is definitely a viable Division I non-football conference with a regional footprint vs a (primarily) single state footprint... With multiple MSAs(think broadcasting).
Or, thinking strategically (should CUSA and/or SBC and/or MWC merge), a WCC+BW+WAC remnants merger would make a trememdous amount of senes if you buy into the strength in numbers argument that Karl Benson made when he advocated that merger some time ago...
Or, it would give the MWC groups a reason to consider a more regional mega conference for travel reasons (among others).
There are options out there and the world will continue to turn even after the WAC's next steps (or demise).
DG you make some fantastic points, but I think those are opinions expressed by the WCC and BWC during a different era for college sports.
Three years ago, there was a lot of comfort and stability. Today, the only thing everyone is counting on is change. Big West adding Hawaii and maybe BSU makes it a regional non football conference.
Same goes with a WCC that sees growth all around it and has to be concerned with its own growth plans, and watching a mega-merger out east makes them seem less relevant.
Yeah, those are places that didn't want anything to do with us several years ago - but everyone is out there making contingency plans for their contingency plans right now...
Things being summarily ruled out just don't mesh with the environment right now, and I find it tremendously hard to believe that (a) the WAC will survive, (b) that doesn't lead to something more like a merger than a dispersal draft, and (c) that doesn't cause other groups to consider their own next steps.
Ho-Lee-CRAP. I am PISSED! I've just learned that the March 9th 2013 DU-UAA hockey contest has been moved to Sunday, March 10th!! Attention Denver University staff: do you realize how much you have inconvenienced me? This is unacceptable. I hereby renounce and relinquish my season tickets. Sunday Hockey....... what. the. fugg!!!!!!!!!
Don't worry. It should actually be a great 3 day weekend. Friday and Sunday hockey against AA, and then our brand new football teams will also be squaring off in a Saturday exhibition to get us all used to it.

Lov ethat old footage...
Good stuff, thanks for posting.
That was probably DU's best ever team, going 9-1 and finishing #18 in the National Rankings.
The team declined an invite to the Sun Bowl, as a lot of the guys had jobs to help pay for school.
That CC punt and kickoff coverage is something to behold.
Seriously...this cc football team's punt coverage was about as effective as their hockey teams' attempts since 1957 to win an NCAA crown.
Sure makes you wonder what DU would look like today with a football program.
For 50 years DU had looked very smart for dropping football, but this current conference fiasco, not having football is holding us back.
You would think other schools would drop football due to the huge costs imposed on athletic departments, but the opposite is occurring.
There is not one athletic dept in the country that can survive on a successful hockey program with a 6000 seat arena alone ......fact!
No football will result in a slow painful death.....fact!
Football is where the $ is, this is what drives athletic departments......fact!
Someone needs the get the wealthy alumns on board and push the school to add football.
No football will keep DU as a small fish in a big pond.
Can DU compete nationally in Football? That's a big money proposition. DU would need 20-50 million to invest in this, right?
I think this would hurt our other sports
Where would DU put a football stadium?
Need to purchase South High across the street.

Football might be the only way to get into a conference. It would surely be a huge gamble.
Sooner or later it may come down to adding football or dropping D1.
I was 100% against football at DU until the WAC blew apart. Now it might be the only way out of the forest.
If the "Football-less WAC Plan" falls apart, DU Athletics should conduct an independent feasibility study on adding football.
D1 Football is driven by the wealthy alumns.
Stop talking about how great your $200,000 DU education and all the success that it brings!
Talk is cheap. Results speak volumes.
If the DU alumns leave it up to the Academic types that are running your athletic department, you're sunk.
Your don't have to start with a BCS program. Start with an FCS and build a solid program.
This is simple stuff here people.
Here's a list of 24 colleges that are adding football or considering adding football within the next three years.

Interesting to note, but hardly surprising, that most of the schools are in the sunbelt.

Q: Can DU get into a "crappy" conference without a football program?
A: It remains to be seen.

The WCC & the Big West want nothing to do with DU or Seattle.
Boise State will receive financial help from the Big East to pay the Big West schools for travel costs.

Relinquish your tickets over one game against the Oceanpups?
WTF.
Troll.
Probably just "Nacho Man" Abe Mexico

Our official new school logo is in the upper left corner.
This is part of new branding and marketing program. Apparently there is more to come.
I doubt Boone will be a part of it, but maybe there's some hope. Anyone know more?
The last time DU did a branding project "Boone was not to be discussed in any way shape or form."
Doubt anything has changed this time around.
I do like the new logo.
BTW, rumor that Condi is being considered as Romney's Veep. Would be great for DU if she gets it.
Yea, that's going to happen.....
No way in hell does she get on the ticket. Way too much baggage from the Bush years. The moderate voter would no consider voting another neo-con.
