Mile High Sports Questions Firing Of Gwozdecky

by D-Mac

So, just to be clear, Mike Rice – the basketball throwing, physically abusing, homophobic bullying moron who coaches the mighty Rutgers Scarlet Knights men’s basketball team – was suspended for three games and fined $50K for his outrageously erratic behavior, but not fired despite a three-year record at Rutgers of 44-51 (16-38) with no NCAA tournament appearances, correct?

And just so I have this right, George Gwozdecky – the DU men’s hockey coach who has been with the program 19 years, won back-to-back national championships in 2004 and ’05, had an overall record of 443-267-64, and led his team into the NCAA tournament again this year – was fired because… He was fired because… What? Why? [read entire article]

DU's having a busy week on the PR front.

Slammed by the Denver Post, Mile High Sports & College Hockey News over Gwozdecky and under siege in the Clarion & Westword over Boone.

tsk, tsk, tsk...

Short coaches list..
Phil Housley, Mark Johnson, and Ted Nolan, they are all capable of cleaning up this mess

Terry Frei has an interesting column over on the Denverpost.com site. If I saw the video correctly, I think he talked to Gwoz for a few minutes individually right after the press conference concluded. Anyway, he seems to think someone from DU, probably Peg, will speak about the firing publicly at some point soon. That should be a interesting discussion. Someone from DU needs to get up and face the music here.

Actually, lets be real. Pick up the pieces and move on. So it is what it is. The sooner this can all pass the better. We have some talented freshmen on their way here; we got guys like Leggs, Q, Doremus, Zakky and Jussi no doubt already itching to get back to the rink. At some point, everyone needs to turn the page. This is a perfect time to dive in head first and support the guys who wear the skates and who's names are on the roster. Have a great summer boys, rest up and build those legs. Get ready to work in the fall! CC SUCKS

Laleggia is most likely leaving for the pros

Nincompoop, well said!
Oh wait, most of these kids will not be in DU uniform next year. Soooo easy to turn the page.

Nincompoop - agree with the theory of, it is what it is, we can't change the past and can only look forward to the future. At the end of the day, the sooner we move on the better. I mean seriously, at the end of the day we are all DU fans and we'll get behind the new coaching staff.

With that said, I'm just not ready yet. Whatever the 5 stages of grief are, I'm still in the anger phase and have at least 2 more phases to go until acceptance. I think that will be around early October.

Also, I'm not predicting total doom and gloom, but I would be surprised if we didn't lose current players on the roster and incoming freshman/future recruits that have given verbals already. I guess until I know more, I don't know what to look forward to. Until I see an official roster, I'm assuming that we have no coaches and no players.

Does anybody else follow our players on twitter? I haven't done a thorough stalking, but it doesn't seem that our incoming freshman/future recruits are making any posts about the Gwoz situation. I'm wondering if they really haven't noticed yet. Or they have noticed but don't care. The silence might say something.

Three factors come into play with a new coaching staff.

1). How many current players will turn pro or go to major juniors because of Gwozdecky leaving?

2). How many recruits decommit or ask out of their LOI's because of the coaching change?

3). How fast can the new coaching staff restock the pipeline if players decommit?

Since a coaching change of this magnitude and suddenness has never happened before in the modern era of college hockey recruiting, I'm not sure anyone could give you an educated guess.

You better believe DU has been on the phone with the recruits 24/7 telling them to "hang on" until the new coach is announced.

If the recruiting situation heads south, DU could face a rebuilding/retooling job that will be monumental.

It really will all come down to the new coach and DU's ability to retain Gwozdecky's recruits.

I don't know if DU has gotten this much (local) media attention since I've been affiliated. The debate was a big deal, but I can't recall much of the coverage centering on DU, more just mentioning that it was happening there.

Low expectations for the future of DU hockey. Will DU or CC be last in the NCHC? CC beat DU, ND and MN in the playoffs. DU looks to be the doormat.

We might lose some recruits, but that it to be expected in any coaching change. Frankly, good riddance to any who leave. When you commit to a school, you should be committed to go there. If you are good enough, you will play at the next level, regardless of where you play. And if you aren't good enough, join the 99.9999% of the rest of us and get a great degree.

DU is a premier program, and there will be plenty of good players who want to wear the Crimson and Gold.

Peg's best attribute is coaching selection. Scott and Tierney have elevated their programs to historic high levels of performance, and I have no reason to believe that DU can't find a quality coach.

I agree with a lot of what the author of the article is saying, but he lost me when he made fun of the AD's name. C'mon, are you in third grade or what?
