Calgary native Tariq Hammond [6'2 185 lbs.] of the Okotoks Oilers [AJHL] committed to the University of Denver over the weekend. Hammond, a defenseman, scored 9 goals and 32 assists in 108 career games in the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
Tariq’s father, Jon Hammond, was a member of the Regina Pats Memorial Cup winning team in 1974 and his grandfather was in the New York Rangers system.
Former NHLer Rob Tudor [Vancouver, St. Louis] is Tariq's billet family in Okotoks.
Hammond is regarded as a late-bloomer, often overlooked in minor hockey at young age, but has progressed steadily in recent years.

Be interesting to know if Murray Armstrong and Tariq's grandfather ever crossed paths. The Regina and NY Rangers connections make it a possibility.
Fighting may be on the way out in the USHL after some scary news out on Saturday night.
A game between the Monty's former team the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders was suspended when 18-year-old Dubuque defenseman Dylan Chanter was severely injured following a fight on the ice.
Cedar Rapids had a 2-0 lead midway through the second period when the incident occurred. According to reports, Chanter's helmet came off during his fight.
Chanter lost his balance and fell backward, hitting his helmetless head on the ice dislocating his left shoulder.
The crowd cheered until seeing Chanter begin to severely convulse. His full-body seizure lasted at least two minutes, as team trainers and the RoughRiders' team doctor rushed to him.
He remained on the ice until paramedics arrived on the scene roughly 15 minutes later.
Chanter was conscious and moving when taken from the arena. Dubuque assistant coach Oliver David said the player was in stable condition, with Fighting Saints head coach Matt Shaw with him at the hospital.
Immediately flashed on Bill Masterton. Let's hope the young man is all right.
Tariq is one of the Alternate Captains on his team.
