As the DU national Lax champs re-load for the 2015-2016 season, recruiting has taken a new twist. Of the 15 new recruits, eleven are from either California or Colorado. The balance are stalwarts from the East Coast. Of the total incoming players, ten of the recruits are high school All-Americans. The Pios should be loaded with talent with three of their top four scorers returning and a host of new weapons. The biggest challenge is replacing the talented Ryan LaPlante in goal.
There were two big surprises in DU's recruiting haul. First, no Canadians join the Freshmen class. Canadian players have added toughness and creativity as DU has grown their program over the years so it will be interesting to see if this is a "one off" or a trend for the Pioneers and Matt Brown. Second and slightly less surprising, following the success of Tewaaraton nominee Zach Miller from the Seneca Nation, was that DU did not add any native American players to the roster.
The big take-away for the collegiate lacrosse world is the exponential growth of lacrosse in the western US. Tierney and his staff appear to have their pick of these premier players.
