Two DU Recruits Listed In Final Draft Rankings

Two University of Denver recruits were listed among the Top 200 North American skaters Wednesday with the release of Central Scouting's Final Rankings.

Defenseman Will Butcher was listed at #87 after being ranked at #170 in the Mid-term Rankings.  That will likely project Butcher to be a 4th to 7th round selection at the NHL Draft this summer.

Incoming DU forward Trevor Moore was listed at #192.

Current DU forward Quinten Shore was listed but not assigned a ranking.

Former DU defenseman Dakota Mermis came in at #95.  Defenseman Gage Ausmus who reportedly decommitted from DU after Coach Gwozdecky was fired was listed at #148.

DU Recruit Trevor Moore Leads Team In Scoring

Trevor Moore
From: StormHockey.com

Tri-City Storm forward Trevor Moore has really elevated his game during his second season in Kearney, Nebraska. Moore is currently leading the team in scoring with 54 points on 19 goals and 35 assists this season. He ranks thirteenth in the USHL in overall scoring and his 35 assists are ninth best in the league.

With nine games to go, Moore has already improved on his numbers from last season, when he had 32 points on 12 goals and 20 assists. His 55 career assists and 86 career points are fifth and eighth-best respectively in team history.

The forward said his success is partly due to a higher level of confidence this season.

“I think I’m more confident with the puck,” Moore said. “I’ve gotten a lot stronger since I’ve been here and my battling skills have improved. I’m able to hold on to the puck and I know I can make plays.”

The Thousand Oaks, Calif. native will turn 18 at the end of the monthand will as a freshman at the University of Denver this fall.

“I think Denver is a great place to play hockey and the atmosphere is unbelievable” Moore said. They’ve always been competitive and I’m looking to win a championship there.”

The school will be part of the newly formed National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC).

“They talk to me quite a bit,” Moore said of his future university. “They want me to keep working out and getting stronger because in college there are a lot of bigger, stronger, older guys and they want me to be able to come in and compete.”

Although he’s happy with the success he’s enjoyed this season, Moore knows there’s still work to be done.

“Right now, I just need to keep working hard,” Moore said. “It’s easier to get tired at the end of the year and get lazy but you really have to work hard and grind it out.”

DU Recruits Shine In USHL/NHL Prospects Game

Two of DU's most promising forward recruits, Garrett Gamez and Trevor Moore, participated in the 2013 USHL/NHL Prospects Game last night in Muskegon, Michigan.  Gamez & Moore helped Team West to a 2-1 victory over Team East.

Gamaz assisted on the game winning goal.

Jason Cotton gave the West a 2-0 lead 1:53 into the second when he took a no-look pass from Tri-City teammate Gamez in the high slot and ripped a shot into the top left corner past East starting goalie Charlie Lindgren of the Sioux Falls Stampede.

"We had a good forecheck going on that goal, and I got a great pass from Gammer," said Cotton, who is bound for Northeastern University in the fall of 2014.

Many scouts and collegiate representatives were on hand to witness the second annual Top Prospects Game.

NHL's Central Scouting Mid-Term Draft Rankings

(above) The 2013 NHL Draft will held in New Jersey
The NHL's Central Scouting released their 2013 Mid-Term Rankings of draft prospects and several players with DU ties made the list. Of course making the list and even being ranked fairly highly is no guarantee of getting drafted next summer.  Last year former DU player Dakota Mermis was ranked #77 and DU forward Quentin Shore was #107 and neither player was selected six months later.

Players can use the second half of the season to propel themselves up the list as Paul Stastny did in 2005.

DU recruit Trevor Moore [5'10 175 lbs.] is ranked #108. With 15 goals and 23 assists in just 35 games, he is having a sensational season with the Tri-City Storm in the USHL.  Look for Moore to move up in the final rankings, but obviously his size may be a factor against going in the first few rounds.

Next on the list with DU ties is defenseman Will Butcher [5' 10 191 lbs.] at #170.  At one point, Butcher was listed on several NHL Mock Drafts as a late first round selection last year.  Even though he's having a very nice season with the USNDP Under 18 team [34 games, 6 goals, 13 assists].

Finally at #186 is Quentin Shore.  Shore has been on fire in the first five games of 2013 and should move up the list.  If he can keep it up for the remainder of the season, he may be drafted.

Some will be surprised that DU recruit Gage Ausmus [6'1 210 lbs.] was not listed.  His size is within NHL specs but a lack of goals this season, probably hurt his ranking.

Two of the 40 players selected for the 2013 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game are University of Denver recruits. Californians Garrett Gamez and Trevor Moore will play in the January 23rd game.

It is the second season for the event, which will showcase many of the top players in the USHL who are eligible for the 2013 NHL Draft. The selection process was completed in cooperation with USHL general managers, NHL scouts and team personnel, and NHL Central Scouting.

DU Recruit Drafted In 1st Round Of USHL Draft

DU recruit Garrett Gamez [6'0" 170 lbs.] a right winger from Los Angeles was selected in the first round of the USHL Draft today with the 8th overall selection by the Tri-Cities Storm.  Gamez will attend the University of Denver in 2014.

Gamez turned down an opportunity to play in the USHL this past season, so that he could continue developing in California.

“We are thrilled to get Garrett,” said Storm GM/Head Coach Josh Hauge. “He was a player we tried to add around Christmas this past season, but he was a loyal kid to the team he was playing with (Jr. Kings U16).  We are excited that we are getting a character individual to come in and be a solid contributor right away.”

Next season he'll be Tri-Cities teammates with fellow Californian and DU recruit Trevor Moore.

Another 2014 recruit Dylan Gambrell [5’10, 154 lbs.] was selected with the 11th overall pick in the first round of the USHL Futures Draft by the Dubuque Fighting Saints earlier this month. Gambrell is from Seattle but spent this past season playing AAA hockey in Denver for the Colorado Thunderbirds.

DU recruit Connor Chatham was selected in the 3rd round by Omaha Lancers, but its not known if he will play for the USNDT Under 18 Team next season.

DU's 2nd Youngest Recruit Tearing Up USHL

Trevor Moore
From: The Independent
by Seth Blank

As one of the youngest players in the United States Hockey League, Trevor Moore couldn’t be faulted for being nervous.

After all, the 16-year-old forward from Thousand Oaks, Calif., hadn’t ever played on the USHL’s big stage with much bigger opponents than the ones he faced while playing for the LA Selects Hockey Club Under-16 team last season.

“Some of these have full-grown beards and missing teeth,” Moore said. “It was a little intimidating at first, but you get used to it. I have Kenny out there with me so I knew Kenny would protect me.”

Kenny is forward Kenny Brooks who along with Nick Lappin and Moore form the Tri-City Storm’s top line. The line has accounted for 29 of the Storm’s 66 goals this season. Lappin’s 14 goals lead the team, but Moore’s play over the last month has turned heads.

After registering only one point in his first eight games, Moore has 14 points in his last 13. He had a five-game goal streak and has three multi-point games this season. Add it all up and he has eight goals and seven assists in 21 games this year.

And it’s only December.

Knowing that, Storm coach Josh Hauge is anxious to see how Moore will perform after the Christmas break.

“I think his future is bright. We’re expecting big things from him,” Hauge said.

Dave Moore, who played Division III college hockey, got his son into hockey at age 5. Last season, Moore recorded 19 goals and 22 assists in 35 games for LA Selects. His statistics caught the eye of Tri-City, which selected Moore with its first pick in the 2011 Futures Draft.

On his way to Kearney for preseason practice, Moore visited the University of Denver and accepted an offer to join the Pioneers hockey team in 2013. Although he had talked with other schools, Denver was the first to provide an offer and Moore didn’t think twice about saying yes.

“That’s kind of where I always wanted to go,” Moore said.

Now, Moore’s set on becoming stronger and better, not only to prepare for college, but with the hope of getting drafted in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft — the first year he’ll be eligible.

The USHL didn’t treat Moore kindly at first. As he struggled to gain confidence while adjusting to the speed of the game early this season, Moore confessed the learning curve was stiff.

“Practices here are way tougher compared to playing 16s where the drills are all fun,” Moore said. “Here, every drill is just a good skate to get your endurance up. It’s really tough.”

“...It was frustrating at first. I mean I wasn’t coming in expecting a lot of points. I was told it’s a very tough league, which it is. The speed of it at the beginning was very difficult for me.”

But the game’s pace started to slow the more ice time Moore shelved. He also benefited from being on a line with veterans Lappin and Brooks, who have taken the youngster under their wings. Moore said they’ve taught him “everything.”

“Just watching them play in practice and games, they’re unbelievable guys. I’m so fortunate to be on their line,” he said.

Brooks likes what he sees in Moore. He said Moore’s not cocky and is willing to work hard. Now, all he has to do is keep his chin up.

“He’s still working on his consistency, but he’s there most games. ...He gets a little nervous because he missed a shot. He gets a little down on himself on those,” Brooks said. “...You’ve got to tell him ’Hey, you’re going to have plenty of those. I’ve missed plenty. It’s going to be OK.’”

As Moore began to improve, it didn’t take long for him to find a home on Tri-City’s power play. He has three power-play goals and one power-play assist this year - all coming in the last seven games.

Those are solid numbers for a player who started his power-play days extremely cautious.

“I was really nervous at first because it was a big step. I didn’t think I would get there that quickly,” Moore said. “When I first got on there, I was just trying to pass the puck around and not mess up.”

As he began tallying points, Moore’s confidence has soared to the point he’s not preoccupied with playing safe. Instead, he wants to make plays.

“Obviously, confidence is key. Avoiding mistakes, you have to try not to do that. You have to go try to make the play, and I think, including me, all of our young guys are starting to do that now,” Moore said.

Moore aspires to play in the NHL, and he’s doing all he can to make his dream a reality. Whether it’s spending his free time lifting weights to bombarding his coach with questions, Moore wants to make sure he’s doing everything correctly.

Hauge said Moore is “a pleasure” to coach.

“He’s a humble kid that just does whatever you ask,” Hauge said. “He plays hard every night. He wants to get better. He’s asking questions. You tell him to do something and he’s trying it. He may not do it the first time, but you know he’s going to figure out a way to get it.”

DU Lands Elite Californian Forward Trevor Moore

Trevor Moore
The University of Denver's 2013 recruiting class received a boost when forward Trevor Moore (5'6 165 lbs) announced his intention to attend DU over the weekend.

The USHL Tri-City Storm selected Moore with the eighth overall pick in the 2011 United States Hockey League’s Futures Draft.

Moore was a member of the recent USA Under-17 Team that won first place at the Five Nations Tournament in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Team USA went 4-0 in the round robin format with victories over the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany and Switzerland.

The Thousand Oaks, California native led the LA Selects with 41 points last season, including 19 goals and 22 assists in 35 games. Moore’s scoring helped the LA Selects to the best record in Tier I midget minor hockey.
