Player Profile: MSU's David Backes

Minnesota State University's David Backes matches the Maverick logo by looking like a "bull in a china shop" on the ice. He is an exceptionally gifted player, who stands 6'3 and weighes 210 lbs. What may surprise you is his ability to dish the puck off when surrounded by opponents. Without question he is one of the top players in the WCHA and was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the 3rd Round in 2003.
.
Once again he is leading the Mavericks in scoring with 3 goals and 8 assists, but this is nothing new. The MSU Junior has 36 goals and 52 assists in 85 career games. Last season he was named to the All- WCHA Third-Team and more impressively is on the WCHA All-Academic Team as well.
.
Last season he was a "Pioneer Killer" with two goals in MSU's late season 8-5 upset of DU. It was the second last defeat that the Pioneers would suffer on their way to their second consecutive National Championship.
.
Since he has arrived at MSU, the Blaine, MN. native has led the Mavericks in almost every statistical catagory. This weekend the Pioneers will hope to contain Backes, but if they key on him too heavily he can beat them with his vision and passing skills.
