Westword: Feature Article About Killing Boone

(above) Will Chancellor Coombe stand trial for murdering Denver Boone?
From: Westword
by Patricia Calhoun

The University of Denver was founded in 1864, only five years after Denver got its start and the same year a flood threatened to wipe the tiny town off the map. But DU has always had a fighting spirit — and today, both students and alumni are fighting mad over Boone, the once-official, now-very-unofficial image representing the Pioneers.

At this point, the only mascot the DU community might agree on would be a giant, foil-wrapped burrito with legs — inspired by Steve Ells, the DU alum who was quite the fast-casual pioneer when he opened the first Chipotle in an old Dolly Madison store down the street from DU in July 1993. Today that chain has more than a thousand locations, with new ones opening all the time — not only in this country, but across Europe. And these days, the only thing growing faster than the Chipotle empire is the controversy over Boone [read entire article].

DU Alums Send Banner To Injured Hockey Player

The DU hockey team, staff and fans signed a banner organized by Miller & Debbie Baird to support injured high school hockey player Jack Jablonski. Jablonski's spinal column was severed at the C-5 level during a junior varsity hockey game two weeks ago.

Sign Banner For Injured High School Hockey Player

(above) Fans will be able to sign this banner on Saturday night
DU fans attending Saturday night's hockey game against Alabama-Huntsville at Magness Arena will have an opportunity to send best wishes and thoughts to Minnesota high school hockey player Jack Jablonski.  Known as "Jabby" to his friends, the 16-year-old honors student, hockey forward and varsity tennis player at Benilde-St. Margaret's High School suffered a paralysing injury last week.  Two players rammed Jablonski from behind, smashing him into the boards, and he collapsed motionless to the ice.

According to reports his spinal column was severed at the C 5 level.  Jack had surgery on Wednesday to fuse his vertebrae was it was deemed a success by the doctors, but it also confirmed that his injury was horrific. Jack has limited mobility and no movement in his lower body. At this time it is believed that he will not be able to walk or skate.

Last year University of Denver forward Jesse Martin suffered three fractures to his C2 neck vertebra, an injury that can often cause death or paralysis.  Jesse was able to undergo a remarkable recovery, although he still suffers from lingering physical issues including headaches and pain in his left arm.

The University of Denver community knows all too well about the trials and tribulations of these vertebrae injuries and it is hoped that signing the banner will share our support for the young man and his family in Minnesota.  The DU hockey team and staff will sign the banner first and then it will be available to the public before the game and between periods.

University of Denver Alum Miller Baird (DU '72) and his wife Debbie worked tirelessly to gather thousands of signatures on Jesse Martin's Banner last year and are spearheading Jack's banner signing this weekend.

If You Can't Fire The Band - Fire The Coach

Dianne Murphy
Former University of Denver Athletic Director Dianne Murphy has been in the national spotlight for the past week. After she unsuccessful tried to ban the university's band from the final home game of the season on Saturday, she turned her attention to the school's football coach.

Norries Wilson didn't get much time to celebrate his first win of the season on Saturday. Less than 24 hours after Columbia earned a double-overtime win over Brown, the Ivy League school fired its head football coach.

Columbia announced the move on its website Sunday morning.

"Making a decision of this nature is always difficult," Columbia athletic director M. Dianne Murphy said. "That said, in order to achieve the goals that we have set for the Columbia football program, we believe that it is necessary and appropriate to make a change in leadership at this time."

Wilson, the first African-American head coach in Ivy League history, ends his tenure with a 17-43 overall record (10-32 in Ivy League play) [read entire article].

Columbia's AD Forced To Reverse Course

From: ESPN.com
by Mike Mazzeo

NEW YORK -- The Columbia University marching band will be able to participate in Saturday's home finale against Brown, the athletic department announced Thursday night.

The marching band had been banned from performing Saturday after poking fun at the winless football team following a 62-41 defeat last weekend at Cornell.  Columbia is 0-9 this season, 0-6 in the Ivy League.

Columbia athletic director Dr. M. Dianne Murphy explained Thursday night why the athletic department decided to change its mind.

"We are proud of our talented and dedicated student-athletes -- but as we have discussed this issue over the past day, we come to the conclusion that the core free speech values of the University are best served by providing a forum both for speech that might sometimes offend -- as well as for the kind of open discussion that ultimately leads to greater understanding and collegiality among all members of our community," she said.

Columbia senior José Delgado, the band's manager, had emailed a statement to ESPNNewYork.com after learning of the team's ban:

"The Columbia University Marching Band would like to apologize to the members of our community, in particular to our fellow classmates and coaches, who were offended by the incident that occurred on November 12 at the Columbia vs. Cornell football game. We accept the consequences and look forward to continue to be a part of our school spirit for future athletic events."

Columbia AD Bans Band From Playing Finale

by Trevor Cohen
"We all were winners at the start, but four years has taught us all the value of just giving up, cause we really suck, why are we even trying? We always lose, lose, lose but we take solace in our booze."
-Improvised Columbia lyrics sung by the band last Saturday at Cornell
This is no way to drum up support.

Columbia University Athletic Director M. Dianne Murphy banned Columbia's marching band from the final home football game Saturday after it performed a parody of the school's fight song.

Murphy has been busy since she departed from the University of Denver in 2005. Under her stewardship Columbia has become the worst college football program in the country averaging just two wins a season. This season is even worse than usual with the Lions off to a 0-9-0 start.

In past years Murphy banned the club hockey team for an entire semester for posting sexually suggestive fliers around campus looking for recruits.

The Columbia University Marching Band, long known for controversial and provocative humor, crossed a line at last Saturday’s football game in Ithaca, N.Y. As a result, Murphy has banned the band from playing at this weekend’s season finale against Brown at Baker Field.

The decision came after she took offense to a parody of “Roar, Lion, Roar” the band sang as the football team exited the field following its ninth loss of the season in as many games.

“The Athletics Program welcomes the band to our football games to promote school spirit and provide fan entertainment,” the athletic department said in a statement. “We believe the actions of the band on Saturday, Nov. 12, were inappropriate and embarrassed our student-athletes, coaches, parents, and fans.”

After the final whistle blew on a 62-41 Cornell win—a game that got away from Columbia after it finished the first half with a six-point lead—the Lions walked to the locker rooms past the band, which was seated in the front row of the bleachers.

Rather than singing the traditional lyrics to Columbia’s century-old fight song, many members instead belted an original verse that reflected the losing ways of Lions football—one of a variety of alternative verses that, according to one band member, are meant only for the band bus and Orgo Night, one of the band’s most notable traditions. The first two lines say it all: “We always lose, lose, lose; by a lot, and sometimes by a little.”

On Tuesday, the band was told that it would not be welcome at Columbia’s final game against Brown.

“Our football players, coaches, alumni, [and] parents are extremely hurt, disappointed, and angry by the band’s behavior at Cornell,” Murphy said. “Because of the band’s disrespect for the feelings and efforts of their classmates and fellow Columbians, we believe that allowing the band the opportunity to perform at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium on Saturday undermines the University’s institutional support for our football team.”

Denver Post: Metro Won't Steal DU's Brand

(above) LetsGoDU objected to Metro State's proposed name change earlier this year

From: Denver Post
by Karen Auge

Whatever they decide to call Metropolitan State College of Denver in the future, we now know one thing: it won't be "Denver State University."

"We have been given a very clear message from the legislature that we need to propose a different name," university President Stephen Jordan said in a statement this week.

Last spring, after a round of consulting with marketing specialists, and community leaders, and surveying students, Metro leaders chose Denver State as the school's new name (read entire article).

New & Notes From Around PioNation

Congrats to DU alum Charlie Soule who battled his way to a 9th place tie at the Colorado Open.  Charlie led after after the first round and never collapsed under the pressure.  He was under par all four rounds and his opening round 65 was the second best score of the Tournament.  The $3,383.33 paycheck probably won't cover a new set of custom golf clubs, but he has to be thinking of trying a few more events this year.
----------
LetsGoDU posted this info last month, but the University of Denver made it official yesterday and hired Matty Thomas as the volunteer assistant coach for the upcoming season. Thomas’ responsibilities at DU will include assisting in practice planning, breaking down and analyzing game video, individual teaching and on-ice skill development. A 2005 graduate of the Naval Academy, Thomas was commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy.

Details are emerging for the Versus television coverage of college hockey next season. The coverage is slated to begin in January. Every Friday there would be a Game of the Week televised and each conference will have at least two contests broadcast.

The University of Denver Athletic Department has formed a Social Media Committee to promote athletic events to students, alumni and fans.  Bringing blogs, websites, Twitter, Facebook, texting and other viral campaigns under one umbrella will be a positive development for DU sports fans.  If you have ideas, suggestions or thoughts on social media, post them in the Comments Section below and LetsGoDU will pass them along to the Athletic Department.

The University of Denver has three head coaches on the payroll who have won multiple NCAA D-I national championships.  They also have a volunteer assistant coach who won a national championship as a head coach on board as well.  Excellence comes at a price, and now the Athletic Department must figure out how to pay for it all. Enter Scott Koskoski who will be in charge Development and Major Gifts [six & seven figure donations].

DU Alum Mentions LetsGoDU In Interview

When University of Denver alum Kevin Friduss was interviewed recently for an online article by Oy!Chicago, he was asked about his favorite Blog & Website.  He said "LetsGoDU."
What is your favorite blog or website?
"After attending college at the University of Denver, I became obsessed with college hockey. My favorite blog is letsgodu.blogspot.com, because it is everything DU sports. If I had to choose the website I use most, it would be Weather.com."

LetsGoDU Goes Over One Million Visits

It took 5 years and 8 months, but sometime Wednesday afternoon the one millionth visitor clicked onto LetsGoDU

Of course the Denver Post website gets a million visitors on a good day, so its all relative.  On the other hand LetsGoDU probably lost less money than the Post in the last year.

Thanks to everyone who contributes their time and energy to making this the most fun blog in college hockey.

DU Student Wins Free Trip To Lacrosse Final Four

Congrats to University of Denver Senior Michael Orem, who won a FREE trip to the 2011 Final Four Lacrosse Championships thanks to a Frequent Flier donation from a DU alumnus.  Michael receives a plane ticket, a ticket to the games and hotel accommodations.

Michael is a lifelong lacrosse fan and has attended past NCAA Lacrosse Championships.

Thanks go out to the DU alum & LetsGoDU reader who donated the miles, but wishes to remain  anonymous.

DU vs. 8th Place Gophers Message Board™

This weekend the University of Denver hockey team will face the largest collection of underachieving NHL Draft picks in North America. The Gophers have 19 NHL Draft picks on the roster including seven players taken in the first two rounds of the draft.

How they manage to trail both Alaska-Anchorage and Colorado College in the WCHA standings defies logic.
