Oct. 11, 2008 - LetsGoDU threw a Pep Rally at Spanky's before DU's opening night hockey game against Notre Dame. 260 students showed up, received FREE Bring Back Boone T-Shirts, made posters, ate burgers and supported Boone.

Less than ten days later, Chancellor Coombe announced via an email to students that Boone would not become the Official Mascot of the University of Denver. He did allow that, "DU students and alumni be allowed to use the image as a celebration of that past, to the extent that they may choose."

Bud & Coors Step Up Pep Rally Sponsorship

(above) The LetsGoDU Pep Rally at Spankys received a last minute sponsorship infusion from Budweiser & Coors

In response to the high volume of people that LetsGoDU is bringing to the Pep Rally at Spanky's on Saturday, Budweiser is donating two tickets to the Colorado Avalanche vs. Los Angeles Kings in their private suite on Saturday night, plus a parking pass.

Coors will be giving tickets away as well for the DU Vs. Minnesota State hockey game November 12. They will also be giving other "swag" away from 4-6 pm on Saturday evening before the Wisconsin game.

The DU Pep Band will perform three 30 minute sets, Boone will be in the House, Dollar Beers, $100 Poster Contest and hundreds of DU hockey fans will be pumping up the volume. Boone Posters will be sold for $10 and Boone necklaces will be for sale. Spanky's will provide a special game day menu.

The event is designed to raise funding and publicity for the DU Pep Band and help DU hockey SWEEP THE BADGERS.

DU Pep Band To Play At Spanky's Pep Rally

Between 35-40 members of the University of Denver Pep Band will be performing at Spanky's Roadhouse (1800 E. Evans Ave) on Saturday (4-6 PM).

The band will play three 30 minute sets to pump up the crowd before heading over to Magness Arena to perform at the DU vs. Wisconsin hockey game.

This event is "voluntary" for the band members, so having such a large turnout shows how excited the students are to meet the hockey fans and grab some food at Spanky's.

The band will be collecting donations at the event to fund instruments, travel and uniforms. They will accept cash or checks made out "University of Denver Pep Band." Donations are tax deductible.

For the past month the management over at Spanky's Roadhouse, several DU alums and students have been working together to host a pregame party in October. Agreeing on a mutually beneficial date and securing a permit from the City of Denver were just two of the obstacles to overcome.

We were able to secure the Permit today for Saturday, October 23rd before the DU-Wisconsin game.

The party will be held in Spanky's parking lot and will feature outdoor grilling and fun hockey related activities. Budweiser, Coors, Red Bull and other possible companies have been contacted about sponsorship. We're going to be working for the next month on building and promoting the event.

Keep reading LetsGoDU and we'll keep you updated on the party. We hope to host other events at local restaurants throughout the season.

Over 260 Students, Alums & DU hockey fans showed up at Spanky's Roadhouse for a Saturday afternoon pep rally to kick off the opening of hockey season. A vast majority of attendees were students who responded to the DU Grilling Society Facebook Invitation [more photos of the event are posted on the Facebook Invite]. What does it say about a university who's most pro-active spirit organizations are its hockey blog and BBQ team?

The students had a great time designing posters to take to the game. Many of the students walked away with Spanky's gift certificates donated by DU hockey fan CO14ers. The students practiced a few cheers, chowed down on burgers and mingled with alums.

Minnesota State Senator and former DU hockey player Dave Tomassoni said a few words and reminded the students how lucky they were to witness games in beautiful Magness Arena. LetsGoDU presented Senator Tomassoni with a "Bring Back Boone" T-shirt to wear to Gopher games back home.

Thanks go out to Kent, Tom, Steve, Todd, Brenda, Nick, & Jason and the many, many others who helped promote and organize the event. The Spanky's staff was fantastic and even showed some school spirit by wearing the T-shirts and designing special "Boone Menus" for the event.
