University of Denver students began setting up camp as early as 10 AM Friday morning, braving the first snowfall of the season, in hopes of getting their hands on student season tickets for the seven-time national championship winning DU Pioneer hockey team.

DU kicks off the hockey season on Sunday night with an exhibition game at Magness Arena against the University of New Brunswick.

DU Hockey Banquet Tonight

The University of Denver will host the 57th Annual Pioneer Hockey Awards Evening tonight at The Cable Center on the DU Campus. The Pioneers will celebrate the senior class of 2013 and the 2012-13 hockey season.

Much of the conversation, on and off the dias, will be sure to center around recently departed hockey coach George Gwozdecky.   Its likely that the banquet will be a celebration of the coach's remarkable career at DU, but one has to wonder why its taken until now to honor his many contributions to the university.

Also of interest will be those who won't be in attendance. Reportedly, the family that was the major sponsor of the banquet in past years declined to contribute after the firing of the coach was announced.

The University of Denver has been meeting with members of the DU community to discuss the "mascot development" process. Doug Hirsh [DU '70] has been following the process with particular interest: He was the first human Denver Boone, chosen to portray the caricature that Walt Disney donated to DU to serve as the embodiment of the Pioneer spirit. In 1968, when the school held a try-out for a student to play Boone, Hirsh showed up wearing a fake beard and a coonskin cap he'd found at his frat, the Beta House, and carrying a bullwhip. One crack of that whip, and he had the gig [read entire article].

DU Sends Out Mascot Email To Alumni

Mascot Email Sent To Alumni On Tuesday

The University of Denver's Alumni Relations Office sent out an email to all DU alumni on Tuesday evening containing an update on "the search for a new mascot that the entire DU community can get behind and embrace."

We applaud the university's desire to bring alumni into the process, despite the fact that the email contains glaring omissions and mistakes.

DU Students To Travel To Honduras To Provide Aid

Instead of lying on a beach during Spring Break, a  group of motivated University of Denver students will travel to Honduras in March to provide aid to the global community and gain experience towards their degrees. The group of DU students have been fund-raising and building awareness at Pioneer hockey games at Magness Arena with a table in concourse. 

DU Global Medical Brigades (DUGMB) formed a local Chapter last year of Global Brigades. The worldwide student-led nonprofit organization provides medical, human rights, clean water, micro-finance and environmental assistance in underdeveloped countries.  DUGMB is one of 70 chapters from North American & European universities.

During last year’s mission to Honduras, DUGMB was able to assist over 800 people in two of Honduras's poorest communities.

This year the student group is larger and has more abitious goals. From March 17-23, a group of 40 DU students and several healthcare professionals will travel back to Honduras to provide medical and dental aid to Hondurans living in the rural community of San Lorenzo. Many Hondurans have never had a physical or any medical assistance.

DU student volunteers have been working to raise awareness and funds for medical supplies to staff a clinic in San Lorenzo and provide medical assistance.

DU Finds Itself Embroiled In C.I.A. Scandal

Not content with its historical role as a premier finishing school for children of eastern-elite hedge fund managers & Third World dictators, the University of Denver aspired to become something more, "A great private institution dedicated to the public good."

Step One was hosting the first 2012 Presidential Debate that almost cost a near-comatose Barack Obama a Second Term.

Now its revealed that a 2006 honors graduate of the University of Denver's Josef Korbel School of International Studies has been sleeping with the head of the Central Intelligence Agency.  Not only that, but DU alumnea Paula Broadwell may have divulged national security secrets while giving a speech at the University of Denver in October.

Recently the FBI began an investigation of Broadwell, whom allegedly sent threatening emails to another women, Jill Kelley, she suspected of also having an affair with CIA Director David Petraeus. The FBI obtained Broadwell's computer, which containing classified documents, leading to FBI scrutiny of her relationship with Petraeus.

The fallout is that C.I.A. head-honcho David Petraeus has resigned in disgrace because of the affair.  Broadwell's emails set off the chain reaction that ruined his career and legacy.

It turns out that Broadwell was born and raised in North Dakota becoming valedictorian, student body president and homecoming queen of her local high school in Bismark, ND.  Broadwell was voted “most likely to be remembered" in her high school yearbook.

The Pumpkin That Lauched A Mascot

For those that don't know or remember the entire backstory...

A University of Denver Alum from Atlanta emailed LetsGoDU this photo of his "Pumpkin Boone" in 2008.  The Bring Back Boone movement was gathering momentum across campus until Chancellor Coombe's decision that, "Boone would not become the official mascot of the University of Denver."

After Coombe's controversial decision, Richard emailed me again and said, "Lets just build a Boone mascot anyway."

So LetsGoDU published an article and asked for donations. 25 alums, students and fans sent in checks totaling $4,800.  The Boone mascot was designed, built and purchased from a company in Toronto in time for the 2009 Frozen Four in Washington DC.

As as Boonemania sweeps across Pionation, know that without this carved Halloween pumpkin there would not have been a Boone mascot costume.

Thoughts & Observations From Homecoming

Fantastic student support at both games this weekend.  Band, Boone, Cheerleaders, DU Dance Team all did a great job.  Awesome to see our hockey team leading by wide margins on both nights and virtually no student fans leaving until the final buzzer.  Well played.

Props to DU for cutting back on the canned music on Saturday night so that the band could be in the spotlight.

The Saturday night pre-game Taste of DU Event in Gates Fieldhouse was incredible once again.  DU doesn't publicize it because they want to keep it for the parents & alumni.  Its a sampling from restaurants that are either local or alumni owned.  Thanks to the hard-working DU Alumni Office staff that puts on this event annually.  Its easily the best pregame event of the hockey season.

The annual hockey alumni Orange-Lemon Contest had the added bonus of Mark Rycroft, Paul Stastny & Tyler Bozak competing.  Wish DU could figure out a way to let the alumni guys do this between periods of the Homecoming game in front of 5,000 fans.  And yes, the three DU alums with NHL experience all missed their first shots, so were in the "Lemon" line.  Rycroft "won" the Lemon & Petri Gunther the Orange.

Michigan Tech hockey coach Mel Pearson is a crybaby.  On Saturday night as the game was unraveling for Tech late in the first period, four MTU players were sitting in the Penalty Box, Mel was screaming at the officials and at the same time was distracted by several DU frat boys sitting behind him banging on the glass.  Never seen a coach react to fans while the puck is in play.  Net result, DU students were relocated to better seats as DU seized control of the game.

Nice game by DU goaltender Adam Murray on Saturday night.  He looked like he was really enjoying himself out there.  Great to see.

Wish I had a dollar for every fan at the game who told me they love the grittiness of this young DU hockey team.  Its "Old-time hockey, like Eddie Shore used to play" at Magness Arena.

Limo ride around campus with Boone and other DU alums on Saturday afternoon was a great experience.  Will have to add that to future game day bucket lists.

TRIVIA QUESTION: When was the last time DU scored five or more goals in four consecutive regular season games? Oct. 25th - Nov. 2nd, 2002.  They defeated Alabama-Huntsville 7-2, 7-0 & Wisconsin 5-3, 5-3.

Note: DU did it on two more recent occasions, but needed exhibition games to pull off the feat.

The photo above is an elaborate "homemade" float participating in the 1984 DU Homecoming Parade.  Although student participation is much, much larger these days, the floats back in the day were quite cool.

If you check out the link to the photos of this years' Homecoming Parade, the participation is far greater these days.  The crowds along the parade route have been very impressive in recent years.
