The University of Denver is trying to make some money on UND men’s hockey fans — or keep them out of Magness Arena this season.
When
single-game tickets go on sale Friday morning for UND’s road series at
Denver, the Pioneers will require that fans buy tickets to two other
selected Pioneer games if they want to go to a UND-DU game. The website
doesn’t currently list which other games will be part of the three-game
pack, but it won’t be a second UND-DU game.
For fans who don’t want to purchase sets of three, there are two other options.
The first is getting them through the UND Alumni Association, which has a number of tickets for that series.
The other option is for fans would to get group tickets, which can be purchased by groups of 20 or more.
The
new single-game ticket policy comes after several years of UND’s fan
base — and its large alumni base in Colorado — virtually turning that
series into a home game for UND.

Before last year’s series, Denver captain Paul Phillips explained the UND fan factor to U.S. College Hockey Online.
“As
crazy as it sounds, even though it’s a home game for us, it’s kind of
like a home game for them,” Phillips said. “They bring so many fans with
them and their fans are so loud. It’s real important that we can’t let
their fans get into the game. We have to throw the first punch.”

You might recall the dazzling save Jake Allen made for the St. Louis Blues earlier this week. Well, University of Denver goaltender Juho Olkinuora might steal the title for stick save of the year.
With Denver clinging to a 5-4 lead, Olkinuora made a big pad save on a point shot, but the rebound went right to the stick of North Dakota's Corban Knight with a completely open net.
Consider that Olkinuora was still recovering from giving up that rebound on the point shot and that Corban Knight, a Florida Panthers draft pick who has been on the CBSSports.com Hobey Baker Award Watch on more than one occasion is one of the elite players in college hockey.
The reflexes and athleticism (and maybe a little luck) it takes to make a save like that is just mind boggling.
Allen's was pretty great, but Olkinoura had to make two saves in quick succession and essentially saved the game for his team.
Denver held on to beat North Dakota 5-4 and get a huge WCHA victory heading towards the postseason.

The University of Denver jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Saturday night at Magness Arena, but North Dakota responded with six straight goals to split the weekend series.

The recent spike in former University of
Denver hockey players making it to the NHL has put another competitive
spin on the Pioneers' rivalry with North Dakota.
Combined, DU and
North Dakota have 18 alumni collecting NHL paychecks this season, a
massive number when you consider both schools are mid-majors, with an
undergraduate enrollment less than 12,000.
"It's a big reason
guys go to one of these two programs," said DU freshman Nolan Zajac,
brother of former North Dakota forward Travis Zajac of the New Jersey
Devils. "Everyone wants to go to the next level, and guys from Denver

University of North Dakota hockey player Danny Kristo remembers getting a talk from three seniors before his first college hockey game.
Chris VandeVelde, Darcy Zajac and Chay Genoway sat down the team’s 10 rookies and explained to them that the season-opening nonconference games against Merrimack could end up determining the University of North Dakota’s postseason fate five months down the line.
“I remember them telling us that these are the games that make or break you at the end of the year,” Kristo said. “It helps to go through it personally, but they drilled that into our brains right away.
“I think that’s why we’re there every year. We know how important those nonconference games are and we’ve had a good nonconference record the last couple years.”
One team that did take care of business in nonconference play this season is the University of Denver. The Pioneers entered a late-December Hall of Fame Game against Boston University on an eight-game winless streak, but managed to knock off the Terriers in a one-game shot.
Denver, which currently sits in solid position at No. 11 in the Pairwise Rankings, would be nine spots lower at No. 20 if it lost to the Terriers.
UND is sitting in strong position at No. 6, thanks in large part to a Friday night win over Boston University at home. UND broke a 2-2 tie in the third period and went on to win 4-2. Had UND lost that game, it would be six spots lower at No. 12.
“The older guys who have been through it understand the ramifications of it and how the Pairwise can change in the last month and a half of the season,” UND coach Dave Hakstol said. “Without question, we make a very strong point coming into camp in the fall to have an understanding of how everything is put together and how important nonconference games are.”

College hockey's midseason Christmas break can't come early enough for the University of Denver hockey team. A depleated forwards corps is showing its limitations late in games during a six-game winless streak. The University of North Dakota rolled Denver 6-3 on Saturday night in Grand Forks adding to the Pioneers recent woes.
Despite the recent troubles, DU remains in first place in the WCHA by one point over Minnesota.

Denver 2 - North Dakota 2 OT FINAL
The University of Denver and North Dakota played to a 2-2 tie on Friday night in Grand Forks. Though DU never trailed, North Dakota carried much of the play in the last half of the game.
Late heroics by Jussi Olkinuora, including an incredible soccer style diving save, kept DU from losing the game.
Chris Knowlton & Scott Mayfield scored for the Pioneers.

That’s bound to happen when you’re battling each other for college hockey’s top prizes year in and year out.

Home improvement retailer Menard Inc. says it will hire workers from its home base in Wisconsin and fly them to North Dakota to staff a store in Minot, which is near the state’s booming oil patch and because so many people had previously left the state.

The company said in a statement that it plans to hire 50 workers in Eau Claire, Wis., where it has its headquarters, and fly them weekly to Minot, which is also in the middle of an unprecedented building boom as it recovers from record flooding last year.
Menard, which has more than 200 stores in the Upper Midwest, said this would be the first time it has ferried in workers by airplane, but it believes jetting in employees for weeklong stints and housing them in hotels “is going to be a permanent solution for as far as we can see.”
“We were able to stay staffed with the oil boom, and then the flood happened,” Graef said. “Now, we’re trying to get ahead of both of those.”
Finding workers to keep up has been tough, he said.
“Everybody has a ‘now-hiring’ sign in their window,” Graef said.
Businesses struggle to attract workers throughout North Dakota, which has some 22,000 more jobs than takers and the lowest unemployment rate in the nation, at 2.4 percent, Job Service North Dakota data show. The unemployment rate in Minot is 2.3.

The DU Women's Golf Team lost a blue-chip recruit when Mia Landegren from Connecticut decommitted and signed a Letter of Intent with the University of Alabama. Two of his older brothers were big-name hockey players for tradition-rich North Dakota, when the seven-time NCAA champion had a nickname. So how in the name of the Fighting Sioux did blue-chip defenseman Nolan Zajac land at the University of Denver?

The frantic phone call to University of North Dakota police earlier this month by a dormitory RA that resulted in four UND freshman hockey players cited for underage drinking and seven other players suspended, came in as a request for medical assistance.
The responding officer, Cheryl Sevigny, reported that paramedics suggested two of the freshmen be watched overnight and took another to the emergency room on suspicion of alcohol poisoning.
On Friday, Grand Forks County prosecutors charged the four freshmen players with underage drinking, a Class B misdemeanor. They are Jordan Schmaltz, 18; Bryn Chyzyk, 19; Zane Gothberg, 20; and Drake Caggiula, 18 [read entire article].

Sophomores Connor
Gaarder, Andrew Panzarella and Stephane Pattyn — all of whom are at
least 21 years old — have been suspended for UND’s Oct. 20
regular-season game against Alaska Fairbanks, the team’s second game of
the season.
Earlier in the week, the school announced
captains Andrew MacWilliam, Corban Knight, Danny Kristo and Carter
Rowney — all of whom are also at least 21 — would sit out the
season-opener on Oct. 19 against Alaska Anchorage.
UND also
announced an additional one-game suspensions to Kristo and sophomore
forward Brendan O’Donnell for violating athletic department policy
unrelated to the team party, meaning Kristo will sit out the entire
opening weekend. O’Donnell will miss UND’s game on Oct. 19 against
Anchorage.

Hakstol Fed Up With UND's Bad Boyz Antics

Ruh Roh. The University of North Dakota party hockey team has finally gone too far and this time the head coach, the athletic department and the university have had enough of the antics. A blowout party on September 15th must have been a doozy, because the team captain and assistants took the brunt of the repercussions. In addition:
- UND's Athletics Department issued "team probation" under which any further violations by a team member could result in immediate reduction of scholarship, suspension from competition, or expulsion from the program.
- The implementation of a mandatory team community service program
- Weekly team alcohol education programming
- Senior captain Andrew MacWilliam and assistant captains Corban Knight, Danny Kristo and Carter Rowney have been suspended for the opening game of the 2012-13 regular season.
The suspensions are a result of a team party on Saturday, Sept. 15, according to a school-issued news release.

“The behavior in this situation was unacceptable,” North Dakota athletic director Brian Faison said in a statement. “Measures taken by the athletics department do not preclude possible additional measures by the department, or actions by the university or local and state authorities.”
“Recent actions by our team are not a good representation of our place as role models within our community,” added North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol. “We have young men of high character in our locker room, but our players, and in particular our leaders, must be accountable for their actions.”
In addition to the suspension of the team captains, Faison announced several additional team disciplinary measures including, but not limited to, athletics department-issued team probation under which any further violations by a team member could result in immediate reduction of scholarship, suspension from competition or expulsion from the program, the implementation of a mandatory team community service program and weekly team alcohol education programming.
The four captains will miss North Dakota’s game Oct. 19 against Alaska-Anchorage at the Brice Alaska Goal Rush in Fairbanks.

Bad Boyz: UND Players In Mid-Season Form
Freshman defenseman Dan Senkbeil, who was cited for a minor in posession and for failure to halt on Aug. 31. He was suspended from all team activities for two weeks. Senkbeil received his minor one week before turning 21 years old.
Freshman forward Michael Parks was cited for a minor in posession and his punishment is being handled internally. Parks is 20 years of age.
