The University of Denver hockey team's overtime woes continued on Saturday night at Magness Arena. The University of Nebraska Omaha rallied in overtime to record a 3-2 victory.

Denver opens NCHC league play this weekend when it plays host to Nebraska Omaha in a two-game series beginning Friday night at Magness Arena in a 7:30 PM MT. The two teams conclude the conference set on Saturday at 7:00 PM MT.
DU Soccer "White Out" Next Saturday
While the DU hockey team treks up to Alaska for the Fairbanks Tournament next weekend, the action never stops on campus.
DU students will be pre-gaming before the University of Denver Men's Soccer game on Saturday, Oct. 19th. DU will face University of Nebraska-Omaha.

The Tailgate will be DJ'd by Nick Perfido and sponsored by Red Bull.
There will be a halftime competition between Greek Houses and a performance by DU Dance team. The student section for soccer will be the farthest north section underneath the golden tower. The game is a whiteout so come decked out in white. The game is at 7 PM and the tailgate kickoff around 3 PM.

Minnesota head coach Don Lucia was named head coach of the 2014 U.S. National Junior
Team in an announcement made Saturday. Boston College assistant coach Greg Brown, Denver assistant coach
David Lassonde and St. Cloud State head coach Bob Motzko [a former DU assistant coach] will be Lucia’s
assistant coaches with Team USA.
The 2014 IIHF World Junior
Championship runs from Dec. 26, 2013 to Jan. 5, 2014, in Malmo, Sweden.
The U.S. is seeking its fourth medal in five years, having won gold
under Phil Housley in 2013 and under Nebraska-Omaha coach Dean Blais in
2010 and the bronze medal in 2011.

DU remains tied for first place in the WCHA with UNO but eight teams remain within two wins of first place. The Gophers, North Dakota & St. Cloud State have two games in hand and are just one or two points out of first place.

The University of Denver may have been outhit, outplayed, outshot & outmanned on Friday night against the University of Nebraska-Omaha, but timely goals stole the show. DU rang up goals seemingly at will and usually against the flow of play.
DU used the offensive good fortune to roll to a 7-4 victory. Zac Larraza & Matt Tabrum scored twice to pace Denver.

Jacobson [6'1 215 lbs.] had been used primarily as a checking forward at DU, but his first goal turned out to be huge. He is also the step-son of NHL Player Ruslan Fedontenko.
Cornell scored in the first minute and then DU goaltender Juho Olkinuora held them scoreless for the remainder of the game.

UNO's path to a return trip to the NCAA tournament is treacherous at best.
With Denver coming to CenturyLink Center on. Friday and Saturday nights for the final series of the regular season, the Mavericks need to somehow start playing their hottest hockey of the season.
A six-game winning streak that would put the Mavs in the championship game of the WCHA tournament (including a sweep in the first round of the playoffs) still might not be enough to earn one of the 11 at-large spots into the 16-team NCAA tournament [read entire article].
Bye Weekend Helps DU In Pairwise Rankings
The University of Denver hockey team used the bye week to help several key players recover from injuries. An unexpected benefit was DU rising to #12 in the Pairwise Rankings.
The Pioneers precaroius current position in the Pairwise Ranking is dependant on Bemidji State remaining as a "Team Under Consideration."
Important upcoming series' against Colorado College, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota & UNO will probably determine if DU will make the NCAA Tournament in March.

Jim Scherr, the former head of the U.S. Olympic Committee was introduced as commissioner of the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference on Wednesday. Scherr signed a 4 1/2 year contract with a base salary of $150,000 that will take him through the 2015-16 hockey season. His contract also includes the possibility for bonuses.
The new league will include the University of Denver, Colorado College, North Dakota, Miami, Minnesota-Duluth, Nebraska-Omaha, St. Cloud State & Western Michigan.

Scherr said one of his first tasks will be to help solidify media platforms for the league. The NCHC will soon announce its first television contract. The Grand Forks Herald reported it will be with the CBS Sports Network and it will include around 16 telecasts per season.
Bad Boyz: UNO Forward Booted From Team
In a brief statement, University of Nebraska-Omaha hockey head coach Dean Blais announced that senior center Alex Hudson has been dismissed from the team.
Blais says he made the decision after Hudson committed a second violation of team rules this season. He offered no other details.

Hudson had 4 goals and 6 assists in 16 games and had previously been suspended for four games.
Denver Post: Zucker & Shore's Impromptu Tryout
Last weekend's series between the University of Denver and visiting Nebraska Omaha offered Mavericks coach Dean Blais a unique side opportunity.
The distinguished coach got a chance to scout two Pioneers hoping to play for him on the U.S. National Junior Team that will compete at the upcoming World Junior Championship in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta.
DU sophomore forwards Jason Zucker and Nick Shore are expected to make the preliminary U.S. roster and report to Blais with the rest of the American hopefuls on Dec. 18, the day after the Pioneers conclude a two-game series at St. Cloud State [read entire article].

The rest of the game was a story of redemption as DU came back to with two goals in the second period. Shawn Ostrow and Jason Zucker scored for the Pioneers.
Beau Bennett scored the game tying power play goal in the third period. Olkinura played very well down the stretch as Denver salvaged the tie.

The University of Denver scored five goals in the second period to break open a physical contest with the University of Nebraska-Omaha at Magness Arena. DU walked away with a 7-3 victory.
What is becoming apparent is that this young hockey team can score a lot of goals in a hurry. Friday night marked the third time in the last five games at Magness Arena that DU scored at least four goals in a period.
And while this might be the most explosive Pioneer team in the Gwozdecky era, the scoring load is being distributed evenly among the troops. Nick Shore had two goals, while S. Ostrow, J. Mermis, Knowlton, LaLeggia and Drew Shore also scored.
