The air has cleared.
George Gwozdecky will forever be remembered as a great coach in DU and college hockey history. But after what some would deem an unwarranted dismissal after last season, the air has cleared. Time has helped to forget.
In fact the more you look into the future, the easier it is to understand the buzz emanating around the hockey team. Not only will Denver Hockey make its debut in the newly formed National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC), but it will, for the first time in 19 years, have a different face standing behind the bench—new Head Coach Jim Montgomery.

The National Collegiate Hockey Conference will conduct its inaugural
NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey championship tournament at Target
Center! The winners of the conference quarterfinals, which will be
played on the home ice of the top four regular-season finishers in the
eight-team league, will qualify to come to Minneapolis for the NCHC
Championship at Target Center.

Goodbye WAC: DU To Join Summit League
Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports just announced via Twitter that the University of Denver will be joining the Summit League.
For those of you keeping score at home, the Summit League consists of:
North Dakota State,
South Dakota State,
Fort Wayne,
South Dakota,
Western Illinois,
Kansas City,
IUPUI,
Oakland [Detroit] & Nebraska-Omaha.
DU will compete in the Summit League in Basketball [M&W], Golf [M&W], Soccer [M&W], Swimming/Diving [M&W], Tennis [M&W] & Volleyball [W].
DU's Skiing [M&W] team competes in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association, Ice Hockey [M] will compete in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference beginning next season, Lacrosse [M] competes in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, Gymnastics [W] is independent, while Lacrosse [W] competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

NCHC men's ice hockey will make its debut during the 2013-14 season with eight successful Division I programs- Colorado College, University of Denver, Miami University (Ohio), University of Minnesota Duluth, University of Nebraska at Omaha, University of North Dakota, St Cloud State University and Western Michigan University.
Denver coach George Gwozdecky said, "For over two decades, Don Adam has been regarded as one of the top
hockey officials in the NCAA. His leadership skills, organizational
ability along with his experience will be a valuable asset to the
conference and will assure that, under his direction, the league will
receive the finest collegiate officiating available."

DU's Future Schedules Include Pleasant Surprises
The Presidential Debate at Magness Arena [Oct. 3rd] may impact the hockey practice and exhibition schedule, but it remains to be seen if any regular season games have to be juggled.
Boston University will visit the Pioneers next season for in the U.S. Hall of Fame Game. DU hosted this event in 2008 against Notre Dame and the Hall of Fame Dinner the night before featured Bret Hull and several other USA hockey legends inductions. The dinner was hosted at on the floor of Magness Arena and it was an epic evening.
Cornell will visit DU for a two game series next season. This will be a rematch of the incredible 1969 National Championship Game played in the Broadmoor Arena in Colorado Springs featuring future NHL legends Ken Dryden, Keith Magnuson, Craig Patrick & George Morrison. DU won 4-3 on Tom Miller's goal with less than 10 minutes to play.
The University of New Hampshire will be the marquee program visiting Magness Arena for the Denver Cup.

In a surprising development, Minnesota and Wisconsin are negotiating with DU to visit Denver every other season, while the Pioneers will return the visits in alternating years. It is exciting to hear that these rivalries will continue despite the departures from the WCHA. Minnesota and Wisconsin alums in Colorado will be thrilled to hear of this development.
Starting in 2013-14 DU will play the Air Force twice per season. This great rivalry has become very popular recently, so doubling the number of games against Air Force will be another positive scheduling move.
DU is in conversations with the Boston schools about continuing the cross-country rivalries.
With NCHC league play against Miami, North Dakota, Colorado College, Minnesota-Duluth and an emerging rivalry with road-trip potential against Nebraska-Omaha there are exciting times ahead for DU hockey fans.

NCHC Teams Will Play 24 Conference Games
In announcing the plan for its inaugural campaign, Commissioner Jim Scherr said the mix for the first 34-game regular season consisting of 24 conference and 10 non-conference contests.
The conference's member institutions are: Colorado College, University of Denver, Miami University, University of Minnesota-Duluth, University of Nebraska-Omaha, University of North Dakota, St. Cloud State University and Western Michigan University.
NCHC Signs TV Contract With CBS Sports Network
The new conference features UMD, North Dakota, Denver, Colorado College, Nebraska-Omaha, Miami (OH) University, Western Michigan, and St. Cloud State. The new league will see its first season in the 2013-14 college hockey calendar.
The agreement calls for a minimum of 18 conference games, including the National’s semifinal and championship contests. Currently six teams that will be in the new conference are currently ranked in the Top 20 poll.

Jim Scherr, the former head of the U.S. Olympic Committee was introduced as commissioner of the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference on Wednesday. Scherr signed a 4 1/2 year contract with a base salary of $150,000 that will take him through the 2015-16 hockey season. His contract also includes the possibility for bonuses.
The new league will include the University of Denver, Colorado College, North Dakota, Miami, Minnesota-Duluth, Nebraska-Omaha, St. Cloud State & Western Michigan.

Scherr said one of his first tasks will be to help solidify media platforms for the league. The NCHC will soon announce its first television contract. The Grand Forks Herald reported it will be with the CBS Sports Network and it will include around 16 telecasts per season.
NCHC To Get Conference TV Deal On Versus

The National Collegiate Hockey Conference will announce a television deal with NBC Sports Network (what Versus will turn into in January) to air college hockey games nationally.
Notre Dame has reached its own agreement with NBC Sports to air its games, separately from the conference contract. Hockey East will also get a TV deal with Versus/NBC.
The NCHC, according to sources, was reluctant to go along with Notre Dame's television wishes, so the Irish will join Hockey Easy in 2013-14.
Notre Dame Heads East, NCHC To Remain At 8
The National Collegiate Hockey Conference said Sunday it is set on eight teams for its inaugural season in 2013-14, and all indications are that Notre Dame, invited to join the NCHC, will instead seek admission to Hockey East.
Members of the NCHC are Minnesota Duluth, Colorado College, Denver, Miami of Ohio, Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota and St. Cloud State. Notre Dame, a member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, had been considering the NCHC invitation, but the league apparently was done waiting for an answer.
“We are very confident with our decision and excited to move forward as a strong eight-team conference,” Brian Faison, North Dakota’s athletic director, said in a statement as a league spokesman. “It is our goal to establish the National Collegiate Hockey Conference as the premier conference in men’s hockey and there’s no question in our minds that we are well positioned to do so with our membership.”
The South Bend (Ind.) Tribune was reporting Sunday night that Notre Dame is expected to make an announcement Wednesday about joining Hockey East. The top-ranked Fighting Irish open the season Friday at UMD.
Teams in Hockey East are Boston College, Boston University, Providence, Massachusetts, Massachusetts-Lowell, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Northeastern and Merrimack. RPI has been rumored to be a possible 12th team if Notre Dame joins.

While DU is #4 in the USCHO.com Preseason Poll, perhaps what is more telling is that five of the top eight teams are members of the upcoming National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
Additionally, #1 Notre Dame would make six of the top eight if they join the new conference. An announcement about Norre Dame's conference affiliation is expected within a week.

St Cloud & Western Michigan To Join NCHC
Edit: St Cloud State University & Western Michigan University announced that they are joining the NCHC on Thursday.
According to the Grand Forks Herald the National Collegiate Hockey Conference will invite Western Michigan and St. Cloud State to join North Dakota, Denver, Colorado College, Nebraska-Omaha, Minnesota-Duluth and Miami in the new league that will start in 2013-14, sources say.

Notre Dame has not yet decided its future, but also holds an NCHC invite. Irish athletic director Jack Swarbrick told a radio station over the weekend that his school will make a decision within 10 days.
Colorado Springs Will Host NCHC Headquarters

The conference athletic directors accepted an invitation from El Pomar Foundation and determined the Conference's first commissioner and staff will operate all functions of league administration from the Colorado Springs office in the Copper Building (1631 Mesa Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO, 80906), adjacent to the grounds of the world-famous Broadmoor Hotel.

BETHESDA, MD, August 3, 2011 – The newly formed National Collegiate Hockey Conference has engaged two of the country’s leading sports consulting companies, The Goldwater Group and Stafford Sports, to handle planning, coordination and execution of several key projects.
After coordinating the July 13 news conference in Colorado Springs, CO, to officially announce the formation of men’s college hockey’s newest premier league, The Goldwater Group, based in Bethesda, MD, and Stafford Sports, of Medford, NJ, will work on multiple tasks on behalf of the conference’s six founding members: Colorado College, University of Denver, Miami University, 2011 NCAA champion University of Minnesota Duluth, University of Nebraska Omaha and University of North Dakota.
The consultant team has simultaneously commenced work on a national search for the conference’s first commissioner; a research and assessment process of prospective, additional members with no specific, pre-determined limit on the final number of institutions; investigating the best-possible media platforms, including a broadcast package, to be in place before the conference’s inaugural season in 2013-14; and identifying viable venues for a post-season championship game.
“As the athletic directors were exploring the possibility of forming a new conference, the complexity of multi-faceted needs was very apparent and we were fortunate to engage and partner with The Goldwater Group and Stafford Sports as our consultants,” said North Dakota Athletic Director Brian Faison. “I know I speak for all of the founding members in saying we appreciate the broad expertise, knowledge, responsiveness and leadership of our consultant team.”
The two consulting firms have successfully collaborated on a range of sports, business development, marketing and venue management projects in recent years and were tapped to utilize their collective experience to cover the variety of disciplines the founding members required to launch the conference. The consultant team is led by Bobby Goldwater, the president of The Goldwater Group, and Carl Hirsh and Rich Oriolo, the principals of Stafford Sports.
